MYTHS and Gods and Goddesses What is a Myth? A traditional, typical ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that serves as a fundamental type in the worldview of the people. Myths were created to offer explanation for something that was unexplainable otherwise. Myths are stories about adventure, triumphs, and devotion. Myth stories are about gods, kings, and heroes. Gods APOLLO EROS POSEIDON ZEUS MERCURY HEPHAESTUS APOLLO Is one of the most important and complex deities in Ancient Greek and Roman Religion. He is considered the God of Sun, Music, Poetry, and Medicine. EROS Eros is considered the Greek God of Love. In Rome he is known as Cupid. POSEIDON Is one of the twelve Olympian deities of the Pantheon in Greek mythology. His main domain is the ocean. He is called the God of Sea, Horses, and Earthquakes ZEUS Is the King of the Gods, ruler of men who rules the Olympians of Mount Olympus, as a father rules his family. MERCURY Was a messenger of the gods who wore winged sandals. He was a god of trade, merchants, and travel. HEPHAESTUS As a smithing god, he made all the weapons of the gods in Olympus. He served as a blacksmith of the gods. He is the god of fire and forge. Goddesses DEMETER Is the Goddess of harvest, who presided over grains and the fertility of the earth. APHRODITE Is the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation.
