•lived between 563 and 483 BC in the area known now as the Indo-Nepalese region SIDDHARTHA (BUDDHA) ORIGIN Believed that he had passed through thousands of existences before coming to earth Born to the rulers of the Shakya clan It was believed that his mother, Maya, conceived him when she dreamed that a white elephant entered her right side and it was believed that she gave birth to him while standing and immediately after birth, Buddha took seven complete steps. TRANSFORMATION INTO BUDDHA He grew up in wealth and had no contact with the harsh realities of the world At the age of 29 after taking three chariot rides outside of his palace he decided to try and seek the answer to the continual cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Spent six years fasting Decided that that was not the way to reach enlightenment He then meditated under a tree all night and was then named Buddha, or the enlightened one. TEACHINGS Middle Way, believed in a balanced life rather than one of extremes Gave his first sermon on the outskirts of the city of Benares Presented himself as only a teacher rather than a God or object of worship "You should do your own work, for I can teach only the way.“ Necessary to achieve Nirvana and end suffering, or Dukkha Karma- actions that spring from mental intent have an effect on your birth, death, and rebirth cycle FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS Life as we know it ultimately is or leads to suffering/uneasiness in one way or another. Suffering is caused by craving. Suffering ends when craving ends Reaching this liberated state is achieved by following the path laid out by the Buddha SENSE PERCEPTION Emphasized that sense perception tends to mislead man due to man’s conditioned ability to perceive and interpret w/o mental construction, perception is incapable of providing any cognitive information about its object Buddha dies at the age of eighty from food poisoning… DEATH WORKS CITED Brown, Kathryn Selig.
