Buddhism
Wesak
Due to the diversity within Buddhism there are many
different festivals celebrated in different countries at
different times and in different ways. The most important of
these for many Buddhists takes place at the time of the full
moon in May or June and is called Wesak, Vaisakha or Buddha
Day. At Wesak Buddhists remember three important events in
the life of The Buddha, his birth, enlightenment and death.
Buddhists will visit temples or monasteries if
they can to listen to talks about The Buddha,
his life and his teachings. In the temples and
monasteries, shrines and statues are
decorated. Perfumed water may be poured on
statues of The Buddha as a sign of respect.
When night falls a statue of The Buddha may
be taken outside and Buddhists will walk
around it with small lamps in celebration.
As with many Buddhist festivals houses may be cleaned and presents and cards
exchanged.
