Day 9 Why do some igneous rocks have large crystals while others have small crystals or no crystals at all? Some form underground, where the temperature is very warm. The magma cools slowly, allowing large crystals to form. Others form at the surface, where the temperature is cooler. The lava cools quickly, so crystals don’t have time to get very big, and they may not form at all.
