The Composition of the Earth
The Earth is divided into three layers. The outer layer
is lighter than that of the inner material. Because the
outer layer is lighter it floats on top of the lower layers.
1. The Crust
2. The Mantle
3. The Core
The Composition of the Earth
The crust is the outermost layer of the Earth. It ranges
from 5 to 100 km thick. It is also the thinnest layer of
Earth. There are two types of crust, the continental
crust and the oceanic crust.
Partner Question:
What are the two types of crust on the Earth?
The Composition of the Earth
The mantle is the layer
of the Earth between the
crust and the core. It is
very thick. It is about
2,900 km thick and
contains most of the
Earth’s mass. Scientists
have never actually
seen the mantle, yet
they have been able to
study what parts have
been pushed up to the
surface.
Partner Question:
What is the Mantle?
The Composition of the Earth
The core extends from the
mantle to the center of the
Earth. Scientists think the
core is made up of nickel
and possibly some sulfur
and oxygen. The diameter
of the Core is about 6,856
km. This is slightly larger
that the entire planet of
Mars.
The Structure of the Earth
Another way to look at how the Earth is made up is
to examine the physical properties of it’s layers.
Lithosphere - The
outermost rigid layer
of the Earth. It is made
up of pieces called
Tectonic Plates.
Asthenosphere - a
soft layer of the
mantle on which
pieces of the
lithosphere move.
Partner Question:
Where is the Lithosphere located?
The Structure of the Earth
Mesosphere - Strong
lower part of the
mantle under the
asthenosphere. It
extends to the core.
Outer Core - The
liquid layer of the
Earth’s core. It lies
beneath the mantle
and surrounds the
inner core.
Partner Question:
Where is the Mesosphere located?
The Structure of the Earth
Inner Core - Solid dense center. It is about 6,378 km
beneath the surface.
Tectonic Plates
Tectonic Plates - Pieces of the lithosphere that move around
on the top of the asthenosphere

Partner Question:
What are Tectonic Plates?
Mapping the Earth’s
Interior
We know about the Earth’s interior
because of earthquakes. When an
earthquake happens it causes vibrations,
called seismic waves. Seismic waves are
vibrations that travel through the Earth.
Seismic waves will travel at different
speeds through material that might be
thicker or thinner. The scientists measure
these waves and determine what the

material is made of.
What are seismic waves?
