Inside the Earth TOC: Earths Layers 2/27/12 I. Starter: Calculate the Speed of an object traveling 120 miles in 3 hours. Next, calculate the time it would take the object to get 240 miles if it traveled at that same speed. Show your work!!!! Practice: • Record all notes and demo observations in your practice section. The Earth is broken up into 3 main layers oCrust - lithosphere & asthenosphere oMantle – upper, middle, & lower oCore – inner & outer The Crust • Outer layer • 5-100 km thick • 2 types of crust • Oceanic (very dense, made of basalt) • Continental (less dense, made of granite) Oceanic and Continental Crust The Mantle • Middle layer • Very thick layer The Core • Made mostly of iron • 1/3 of the earth’s mass • Very hot Earth’s Layers • How are the earth’s layers similar to an egg? • Shell=crust • Egg white=mantle • Yolk=core Earth’s Layers • How are the earth’s layers similar to an orange? • Peel=crust • orange slices=mantle • center=core Earth’s Layers • How are the earth’s layers similar to an apple? • Peel=crust • Inside of peel=mantle • Apple core=core Although the Earth has 3 Main Layers - it can be further divided into these layers: • Lithosphere • Asthenosphere • Upper Mantle • Middle Mantle • Lower Mantle • Outer Core • Inner Core Physical Structure of the Earth (5 Layers) • Lithosphere- crust and upper most solid mantle • Asthenosphere- solid rock that flows slowly (like hot asphalt)- Convection happens here! • Mesosphere – upper, middle & lower mantle • Outer Core- liquid layer • Inner Core- solid, very dense Mantle III.
