SCIENCE 8
Chapter 1:
Viruses and Bacteria
OBJECTIVE
By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
 Describe how viruses and bacteria infect us
WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE??
Viruses are tiny, non-living particles that can
reproduce ONLY inside a host cell.
 Viruses seem to be living because they can infect
us and spread…
 ….but a virus has no nucleus and no organelles So its not classed as living!

SO WHAT MAKES UP A VIRUS?
DNA (a set of instructions to build a virus)
 A protein coat (armor to carry the DNA!)

Common Cold Virus
A famous virus….HIV
Bacteriophage
SO HOW DOES A VIRUS
REPRODUCE?
(GO TO PAGE 34)
BACTERIA
They are living and can reproduce anywhere!! (as
long as there are some nutrients available)
 They have a modified cell wall, cell membrane,
DNA and ribosomes
 Can be killed by an antibiotic (viruses can’t!)

10 MINUTE RESEARCH!

Choose a bacteria or virus and find out the
following information!
