What’s in an Ecosystem? • Africa Clowers • Devante Kennedy Environmental Science E Hour What’s in an ecosystem? •We explored an area of land around our school and determined the land’s physical features and the types of organisms that live there. •We took about 20 pictures of our area: wide shots and detailed shots. Wide view Wide View Detailed View Detailed View Recorded Observations •Pill Bug •Woodchips •Ants •Green leaf •Twigs •Unidentified white bug Very coarse soil filled with woodchips Dark, fertile soil Pill Bug •The pill bug that was in our sample of soil was 3/4”, oval dark brown, with 7 legs and antennas. •The only crustacean that can spend its entire life on land. They’re known for their ability to roll into a ball, can live up to two years and are most active at night. ANT •Ants range in size from 0.75 to 52 millimeters. Their colors vary; most are red or black, green is less common. More than 12,000 species are currently known with the greatest diversity in the tropics. •They’re able to exploit a wide range of food resources either as direct or indirect herbivores, predators and scavengers. Most species are omnivorous generalists but a few are specialist feeders. •It was 2 of them but they weren’t interacting with each other. Michigan Soils • Mostly the soils in Michigan are all different types of sand. One of the most popular types is Kalkaska: Black sand surface layer, brown sand subsurface layer, dark reddish and yellow brown sand throughout. • Our soil sample however was not made of so many diverse levels. We had dark brown coarse coil and smooth light brown soil on top.
