Database Design and Entry Final Product CD Jamel Joseph GSC Pacific 101-605 Robson St, Vancouver BC, V6B 5J3 Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Bowser Basin What do I do? Database: • Structure • Maintenance • Updating for next field season Data Entry: • Pendragon Forms • Access Forms Final Product CD: • What will be included Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Database: Structure • Goal: To have the most efficient relational database structure as possible. • All data is stored in a Microsoft Access database. • 8 Tables (Station, Traverse, Photo, Lithology, Station Type, Structure, Sample, Modifier). • 103 Lookup Tables. • Each table has required fields that must be entered for each record. Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Database: Maintenance • The data within the database is constantly being updated. • So far we have data from last years field season and from Jim Haggart’s sample collection. Ready to be entered is Kirk Osadetz’s Maturity collection from last year. • More data from previous years will be entered when time permits and when all the required data is there for each table. Ready to be entered are many of Carol Evenchick’s sample data from previous years, including many maturation samples. Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Database: Next Field Season • Database structure is fine. • New fields will be added and some fields will be deleted. • Lookup tables will be updated. • Some data will be modified (Sample Number might be a letter [ex. EP03001a instead of EP030011]) to make it easier to read. Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Data Entry: Pendragon Forms • Program created in Microsoft Access where the user creates forms that are downloaded into a PDA. • These forms are used to enter and store field data so later on the data can be downloaded into the Access database. • The GeoField crew’s Pendragon Forms were used as a template for the creation of the Bowser Project Pendragon forms. • 8 Forms were created (1 form for each table in the database). Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Data Entry: Pendragon Forms • To create, edit, and update any of the fields and/or forms at Geologists request. • Make sure all data from PDA enters the database. • Programming fields using VB to ensure the most efficient/error free forms for the geologists. • For field season only. Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Data Entry: Access Forms • Pendragon Forms on the PDA = Access Forms on the computer. • GeoField was used as a template for the Bowser Project Access Forms. • If edits are required or data was not entered into the PDA then the person can enter the data through these forms. Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Data Entry: Access Forms • Make sure each object in a form is linked to the correct field in the database. • Make sure the pick lists have the correct values. • Update the forms based on updates made to the associated table. • Coding objects using VB to make things work (such as scrolling through records, making thumbnail of a picture appear in the photo form) and to ensure minimum input by the geologist. • All season long. Natural Resources Ressources naturelles Canada Canada Canada Jamel Joseph Feb. 27th, 2004 Final Product: CD • More data then the Bowser Workshop Geosampler CD’s. • Open File 1561 Glenlyon CD will be used as a template. • This CD will include the complete database, detailed (maybe interactive) maps, up-todate photo gallery, and anything else we can think of that is not on the Geosampler CD.
