James Chadwick By: Kayla Maurer & Logan Heinl Background • Born in 1891 & died in 1974 • Graduate of the University of Manchester • Studied under Ernest Rutherford (father of nuclear physics) • After World War I went to the University of Cambridge with Rutherford where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy • Rutherford’s Assistant Director of Research His discovery • Chadwick’s line of research in 1932 led to his discovery of the neutron • Went to measure the mass and went forward in the research of this neutron to find out it was a major weapon in the fight against cancer About the neutron • James Chadwick used scattering data to calculate the mass of this neutral particle • Since Rutherford, it had been known that the atomic mass number of a nuclei is a little more than twice the atomic number for most atoms and that essentially all the mass of the atom is concentrated in the relatively tiny nucleus. After discovery • 1935 he became a professor of physics at the University of Liverpool where he installed a cyclotron • Cyclotron- type of a solid particle accelerator used to make quantities of radioactive isotopes called positron emitters • Carried research as part of the Tube Alloys project to build an atomic bomb and wrote the final draft of the Maud Report • This inspired government to start serious atomic bomb research Cyclotron Works Cited • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Chadwick • http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/phys ics/laureates/1935/chadwick-bio.html • http://hyperphysics.phyastr.gsu.edu/hbase/particles/neutrondis.html
