The Renaissance • The learner will be able to: analyze the origin of the Italian & Northern Renaissances, in order to understand the evolution of culture within Europe. – Guided Instruction – Document Analysis WarmUp #1 • 1. Analyze the map on pg. 436 & answer the questions regarding European trade in the 1300’s. • 2. Read the “Causes of the Renaissance” (quick fact box) on pg. 439 & write 1 concise sentence explaining, in your own words, why the Renaissance began. The Italian Renaissance: 1350-1500 • Renaissance = “rebirth” – looking back to Greco-Roman times for inspiration • began in Italy & spread north to rest of Europe • Characteristics: – urban: city-states are most powerful – secular (non-religious) outlook – emphasized human ability • high regard for individual accomplishment (Renaissance Man: someone good at everything = Leonardo da Vinci) Humanism • humanism: emphasis on human intellect & capability • Petrarch: father of Renaissance humanism • grew into the study of the humanities (i.e. literature, history, art) Italian City-States • Venice, Florence & Milan: most powerful city-states • Venice: traded all over Mediterranean • Florence: banking hub – controlled by de Medici family – cultural center for Italy – Lorenzo de Medici: great patron of the arts • a wealthy individual who pays to have art created Niccolo Machiavelli • Machiavelli: politician in Florence – lost favor & exiled – wanted to return – wrote book of statecraft dedicated to the de Medicis • the Prince: how to gain & keep power • Machiavelli believed good leaders should be amoral: do best for the city regardless of if it is morally right or wrong – “by any means necessary” Machiavelli & The Prince • Men judge generally more by the eye than by the hand: for everyone can see & few can feel. Everyone sees what you appear to be…few really know what you are. Machiavelli: the Prince Medieval Art • very flat • lots of symbolism • religious themes (primarily) Renaissance Art • developed perspective = 3 dimensions on flat surfaces • used geometry to show distance, light & space • studied human anatomy for figures • very realistic • Brunelleschi: the de Medici’s architect – designed churches more for the human worshipper than for God who was being worshipped Brunelleschi’s Dome Renaissance Artists • “the ninja turtles” – Leonardo da Vinci: painter, inventor, poet, philosopher, body dissector etc. (The Last Supper, Mona Lisa etc.) – Michelangelo: painter, sculptor, architect, etc. (ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, David = perfectly proportional) – Raphael: painter (Madonna and Child, School of Athens = balance, harmony & order) – Donatello: sculptor with realistic style – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Opening Leonardo da Vinci Donatello Michelangelo Raphael The Renaissance John Green's Crash Course #22: "The Renaissance: Was It A Thing?"
