Curriculum for PL2 or PL3 Pediatric Residents
Competency: Medical Knowledge and Patient Management
1. How to manage common cardiovascular cond itions:
? Peripheral pulmonic stenosis
? Tachycardia secondary to fever
? Functional Heart murmurs
? Small VSD
? Small PDA
2. Be able to differentiate between pathologic and innocent heart murmurs.
3. Know when to make appropriate referrals to a pediatric cardiolo gist.
? Cyanosis
? Severe Hypertension
? Arrhythmias such as Wolfe Parkinson White, SVT, Atrial Fib/Flutter
? Congestive Heart Failure
4. Recognize the physical findings, pathophysiology, treatment and prognosis for congenital
heart lesions Such as:
? VSD
? ASD
? Tetrology of Fallot
? PDA
? Coarctation of Aorta
? Transposition of Great vessels
? Aortic Stenosis
? Pulmonic Stenosis
? Mitral Valve prolapse
? Total anomalous pulmonary venous return
5. Understand the physiology, indications and contraindications of common cardiovascula r
medications.
6. Understand the indications for and the interpretation of Cardiology diagnostic tests such as
? EKG
? Echocardiographs
? Cardiac catherization
? Holter monitor
? And Myocardial imaging technique
? Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
7. Develop familiarity with surgical and transvascular interventional approach to correcting
congenital and acquired heart lesions
? Interventional catheterization
? Electrophysiologic testing and ablation
? Transcatheter PDA closure
? Transcatheter ASD and VSD closure
? Shunt placement
? Open heart surgery with and without cardiopulmonary bypass
? Closed heart surgery
? Post-operative management
Competency: Practice-based Learning and Improvement
? Consult current literature to review evidence for management approach to
pediatric cardiac disease
? Participate in performance improvement review activities
Competency: Systems-based practice
? Become familiar with resources available for the care and management of patients
with cardiac disease or chronic, debilitating and life-threatening conditions .
? Participate in multi-disciplinary patient/case management conferences and
become aware of the role of different specialists on the healthcare team including
nurses, nutritionists, social workers, primary care physicians, specialist
physicians, surgeons, physical and occupational therapists, etc.

? Interact with families and patients with chronic and life-threatening conditions
? Become familiar with methods of delivering bad-news
? Demonstrate appropriate concern, empathy and understanding for patients with chronic,
debilitating and life-threatening conditions
