BREAKING INTO THE BIZ FORUM Saturday November 11 & Sunday November 12, 2006 In association with Vancouver Moving Theatre Russian Hall, 600 Campbell (at Keefer) Two days of information sharing, discussion, learning and fun tailored for Downtown Eastside community performers and/or artists. Pre-registration is required for the skill building and information workshops. The workshops are on making our art, earning our living, supporting our community and creating a healthy environment in which to do our work. Working artists lead each session. The forum is coordinated by Savannah Walling. A light lunch will be provided. A nonrefundable fee of $7 total for two days must be paid in advance. Phone 604-254-6911 to register. Maximum 25 participants. The Saturday afternoon workshop on Fundraising and the Sunday afternoon Panel Discussion are open to the public and free on a first-served basis. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 11 9:30am – 10am Coffee and muffins SUNDAY NOVEMBER 12 9:30am – 10am Coffee and muffins 10am - noon KICK BALL CHANGE: ADVENTURES IN THEATRICAL MOVEMENT with Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg Choreographer of the award-winning Urinetown the Musical, Tara will lead an exploration of movement and dance, introducing participants to the power of “physicalized performance”. We’ll work through improvisation exercises to harness our individual movement potential and work with choreographed stylized material - all with a sense of adventure and fun! Wear loose move-able clothing and bare feet or shoes you can shake a leg in (running/jazz shoes etc.) 10am - noon CROSSING THE LINE…COMEDY, SATIRE AND TRAGEDY with Gina Bastone Comic characters don’t say funny things – they say things funny! Through the eyes of a comic character we’ll explore social satire and the thin line between tragedy and comedy. Fun improvs will teach focus sharing/confidence/character development/presenting the unexpected/timing and rhythm/developing original material and mask characterization. The class is fun for both advanced and beginner students. Gina is an award-winning performer who has toured internationally with her company BASTA! and Cirque du Soleil. Noon -1pm Lunch 1pm - 3pm WHAT’S THAT YOU SAY? FREEING YOUR VOICE with Raugi Yu Discover where your voice lives. Let’s find it, use it, stretch it, say something honest and powerful with it. Learn how to breathe, fill a big space, access feeling and intention, all Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg the while protecting our voices. Your throat is a wondrous cave and a divine dragon lives there, let it out to Raugi Yu play! An actor and acting coach, Raugi Yu is an instructor for Bard on the Beach’s Young Shakespeareans. 3pm - 3:30pm Break 3:30pm - 5:30pm THE ART OF GETTING MONEY with Michael McLaughlin The who, what, when, where and why of crafting winning funding proposals. Tailor your pitch to your audience. What to include and what to leave out. Does your budget make sense? A lively workshop focusing on techniques that work, and some that don’t. McLaughlin shares his experience as Executive Artistic Director of the Vancouver Fringe Festival and Artistic Producer of Nanaimo’s TheatreOne. Workshop open to Michael NcLaughlin the public. Free 24 Heart of the City Festival 2006 Noon -1pm Lunch 1pm - 3pm BREAKING INTO THE FILM BIZ with Michael Bean A whirlwind overview of Vancouver’s film and television industry: including info on talent agents, getting extra work and tips for working as a film actor. Two brave participants will do an audition-demo and everyone will get the opportunity for quick on-camera practice. Handouts will cover the basic points, also available at www.bizstudio. ca/resources.html after the session. Michael Bean Michael Bean is a working actor, principal acting coach at the DTES Biz Studio and author of Confidence on Camera: A Practical Handbook for Young Actors. 3pm - 3:30pm Break 3:30pm - 5:30pm DOING IT WITH OTHERS! Panel on Collaborative Creation With Renae Morrisseau, James Fagan Renae Morriseau Tait, Savannah Walling, Adrienne Wong and moderator Amir Ali Alibhai. Artists involved in the making of the 2003 Downtown Eastside Community Play share insights and strategies on how to make collaborative creation a healthy, enjoyable and productive experience. Collectively, they’ve been involved in projects with Leaky Heaven Circus, NeWorld Theatre, Enderby’s Runaway Moon, Mandala Arts & Culture, Touchstone Theatre and Vancouver Moving Theatre.
