Welcome to 2015 Ballarat Cabaret Festival,
Australia’s only regional festival dedicated to the art of
cabaret as we return for our fourth year. Representing
the best in cabaret from around the country, the 2015
Festival takes a great leap forward. This year we
feature our first ever international artists. Performing
the sensual music of the Tango, these wonderful
artists come to us from Argentina, the home of the
music and dance phenomenon. You can find all the
details on pages 8 - 9.
The Festival opens with the now traditional gala
on Tuesday 6 October and runs through to
Sunday 11 October. We are also thrilled to bring
back Caravan Burlesque to “Rock the ‘Rat” with
four high-energy performances in the Ballaarat
Mining Exchange, sumptuously decorated to
welcome you. But the fun doesn’t stop there.
With the Archibald Prize running at the Art Gallery of
Ballarat until November, the Festival continues to play
each weekend with an exciting selection of portraitbased shows from a range of exhilarating artists. Full
details of the Archibald Cabaret Portraits Series can
be found from page 31.
Be brave, be daring ... have a ball at the 2015
Ballarat Cabaret Festival!
Patron Welcome
This is a personal invitation to you all to join me in the
audience of the fourth Ballarat Cabaret Festival . This
year’s program will delight, enthral and entertain us
all with an exciting program which includes exclusive
international performers. We are fortunate indeed to
live in beautiful Ballarat with our own ‘Cabaret Festival’
which is gaining recognition and further enhancing
Ballarats reputation as a city alive with cultural
diversity. I just love our city and after a cold winter I
am thrilled to see it coming alive in the spring. Book
now and enjoy yourselves at a price we can all afford.
See you there!

“This was top-tier cabaret and Mills
should find himself in demand…”
Stage Whispers
Rob Mills is…
surprisingly good
Rob Mills with Andrew Worboys,
Steve Marrin, Konrad Bell and Kuki Tipoki
Ballaarat Mining Exchange
Sunday 11th October, 8.00pm
Sometimes when you live in the public arena,
your life can be more eye catching (or headline
grabbing!) than your work.
Reality TV, twitter scandals and THAT incident with
Paris Hilton, are all the stuff of Hollywood. It’s easy
for us to forget who the guy behind these headlines
really is: a remarkably successful and consistently
celebrated musician and actor, Rob Mills.
Despite proving himself in the world of pop music,
television and music theatre, Rob has amassed
twelve years of reviews that revolve around the
notion that ‘considering we know him as that down
to earth larrikin from Idol... his performance was
surprisingly good’…
And now, the cabaret stage provides his perfect
home.

Argentinian soprano
Alicia Ra
with Gabriel Fernández
Bandoneón (tango accordian)
TWO SHOWS ONLY!
PO Box Theatre, Arts Academy
Friday 9 October, 8pm
(one hour 50 with 10 minute interval)
Re-Born in Buenos Aires
Astor Piazzolla is Tango’s foremost emissary to the
world and Argentina’s greatest cultural export.
This towering musical visionary has taken tango
to its limits.
Incorporating jazz and classical forms, Piazzolla
enriched and revolutionised its concepts, creating a
transcendent musical expression called ‘New Tango’.
Alicia Rappoport brilliantly supported by Gabriel
Fernández on the traditional Bandoneón, combines
radiant vocal expression with arresting soul, drama
and movement.
Sensational and enthralling!
Saturday 10 October, 6.30pm
Forbidden Tango
Comparing Argentinian soprano Alicia Rappoport
to France’s beloved little sparrow, Edith Piaf, is by
no means a stretch of the imagination.
Rappoport vividly evokes the passion of her native
Argentina’s iconic music through the powerful
resonance and soulfulness of her voice. Like Piaf,
Rappoport’s magnetic stage presence draws you
into the emotional drama and message of the music.
Forbidden Tango is a trip through an Argentina
when tango was prohibited by the rampant fear and
suspicion it inspired in every one of the dictatorships
that have governed the country.
Be seduced by the rhythm of Argentina.

I know you can be overwhelmed and I know you can be
underwhelmed but can you ever just be whelmed?
Yes. You can. It’s a real word - an old one that’s
faded from popular vernacular. As someone who
relies on solid facts to feel stable in an everchanging world, Gillian is utterly whelmed to
discover this information.
Award-winning comedy sensation Gillian Cosgriff
(Winner Best Cabaret Melbourne Fringe 2013,

asks: in a world obsessed with being happy, being
grateful, and finding joy in the little things, is it
okay to just be whelmed?

Oddie Gallery, Art Gallery of Ballarat
Wednesday 7 October, 8pm & Thursday 8 October, 6.30pm
A follow up to the mega success of her hit show A
Storm In A D-Cup (Ballarat Cabaret 2013), awardwinning cabaret darling, Amelia Ryan, returns with
Lady Liberty. In a brand-new hour of entertainment,
Amelia shares her sometimes deliberate,
sometimes accidental departure, from what is
proper, prudent and polite.
Through her signature blend of scintillating stories,
clever parodies and pop-musical mash-ups, Amelia
asks: what does it actually mean to be a Lady of
Liberty? Is it through meditation or Moët? Modesty
or madness? Monogamy or...ménage à trois?
A delicious cocktail indeed!

These Things Take Wine
Natasha York with Daniele Buatti
The Bluestone Cellar, Craig’s Royal Hotel
Wednesday 7 October 9.30pm, Thursday 8 October 6.30pm
Wine – why we drink it, how we drink it and what
happens under the influence?
Melbourne cabaret artist Natasha York
(Impromptunes, Velvet Addiction, Broadway
Unplugged Winner) tells her stories from pre-drinks
to police encounters, chicken nuggets in your bra,
hijacking buskers and everything in between - after
this ride all that can be certain is you’re not going
to work in the morning.
With songs by Nancy Sinatra, Amy Winehouse,
Nina Simone and even a few improvised
numbers, These Things Take Wine is a cheerfully
tipsy celebration of wine, inebriated hi-jinx and
heartbreak that have helped Natasha develop into
the well-rounded vintage she has become.
*WARNING : this show features a lot of TERRIBLE wine puns!

‘The big find this
year is the terrific
Louisa Fitzhardinge.’
Stage Whispers
Comma Sutra
Louisa Fitzhardinge with Rainer Pollard
Oddie Gallery, Art Gallery of Ballarat
Wednesday 7 October, 9.30pm & Saturday 10 October, 6.30pm
Louisa’s found true love in the English language,
but it’s hard being a grammar nerd when there
are people selling “fresh” strawberry’s and
misusing the word ‘literally’ at every turn.
All she really wants is someone who’ll snuggle
up with her on the couch and seductively whisper
puns into her ear. Ideally in multiple languages.
Is that too much to ask?
It’s nerdy. It’s pun-filled. It might just make you
want to learn a language... or at least start
erasing those damn stray apostrophes on
café blackboards!

13-14 November, 7.30pm
Exquisitely performed by Michaela Burger with
Greg Wain on guitar and directed by Shona Benson,
Exposing Edith is PIAF… her life, loves, soul and
songs… as never seen before.
Showcasing many favourites including La Vie en
Rose, Padam and Rien de Rien alongside lesser
known gems, Burger interlinks touching stories
while seamlessly playing the part of Edith, her halfsister Momone and various famous lovers.
Burger has been dubbed Australia’s very own
“Little Sparrow”! With a voice of ‘uncanny
beauty’ she sings many of the songs in French
and being only 2cm taller than Piaf, and dressed
in her trademark black, she bears an uncanny
resemblance to the legendary French star.
Celebrating 100 years since Piaf’s birth, this is an
unforgettable portrait not to be missed.
