FROM ‘NANCY’ to ‘SALLY’ REALITY TV RUNNER-UP LANDS STAR ROLE IN THE HIT MUSICAL
CABARET
Samantha Barks, the hugely popular runner-up from the hit BBC series ‘I’d Do Anything’, has been
cast in the prestigious role of Sally Bowles in the Award Winning musical Cabaret. A former student
of Arts Ed in Chiswick, Sam returns to South West London sizzling onstage opposite world-renowned
dancer and TV favourite Wayne Sleep in the sensational Cabaret.
Samantha, who received rave reviews from judges including Andrew Lloyd Webber and Denise Van
Outen, spoke of her delight at being cast in the role.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to get this part. Cabaret is one of my favourite shows ever and Sally
Bowles is such a great part to play. Having met Liza Minnelli during the filming of I’d Do
Anything I’m beside myself with excitement.”
Since its Broadway premiere in 1966 and the famous movie version with Liza Minnelli, Michael York
and Joel Grey, CABARET has won a staggering number of stage and screen awards including 8
Oscar’s, 7 BAFTAs and 13 Tonys.
This “Sensational” Double Olivier Award Winner and Variety Club Awards ‘Best Musical’, turns
Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a sassy, sizzling haven of decadence. And at its heart is the legendary
Sally Bowles, who performs nightly at the infamous Kit Kat Klub in ‘a shimmering masterpiece of a
show guaranteed night after night!’
From the creators of the hit musical Chicago, CABARET features show-stopping choreography,
dazzling costumes and some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre including ‘Mein Herr’,
‘Maybe This Time’ and of course ‘Cabaret’.
Wayne Sleep won a Leverhulme Scholarship to the Royal Ballet School in 1961 and joined the Royal
Ballet Company in 1966. Later he became a Principal Dancer and had numerous roles created for
him by - amongst others - Ashton, MacMillan, de Valois, Layton, Nureyev, and Neumeier. He was a
Guest Artist with several ballet companies, including English National, London City, Scottish, Capab,
and London Contemporary Dance. Recently he danced the Ugly Sister in Ashton’s Cinderella with
the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden, at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and in Tokyo.
Samantha Barks has recently finished in the top three of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s search for the new
Nancy in Cameron Mackintosh’s Oliver! Reaching the final of the BBC’s I’d Do Anything afforded
Samantha a wealth of experience, working with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Idina Menzel and Liza Minelli
to name but a few. Having moved from the Isle of Man to London at the age of 16 she trained at
the Arts Educational School for a year before entering the competition to find the next Nancy. She
would like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted and supported her throughout the show!
Cabaret marks her professional theatrical debut.
