Impossible. But here we are, 10 years later – 12, really, if you consider that the first-ever conversation about starting a Shakespeare festival somewhere in the state of Minnesota took place on April 30, 2002. This breathtakingly fast decade of success is owed to so many people: Board members and volunteers; interested, generous, and enthusiastic Winonans; theatergoers from near and far; and a cadre of artists, administrators, and craftspeople who have come to Winona during the last ten years to dedicate themselves to this brave, ambitious dream, and who have helped make that dream an unexpected reality. For this auspicious season, we’ve selected two great plays by our namesake playwright: King Henry V, which picks up the story of the wastrel Prince Hal as he becomes King of England, and which is as much a tribute to the theatre itself as it is Shakespeare’s story of a legendary English monarch. We've paired Henry with our second Twelfth Night, considered by many to be Shakespeare’s most perfect comedy, and which we offer this summer in a new and re-imagined production filled with holiday-seasonal music. Our Intern and Apprentice company members are grappling with the tragedy of Macbeth, which will be performed eight times during the last two weeks of our 10th anniversary season and ensure that our audiences get to experience a comedy, a history, and a tragedy during the brief, ephemeral time we’ll be up and running. Add to the mix our Shakespeare for Young Actors’ project work welcome on Romeo and Juliet (one performance only), and this season will be a feast for the ears, the heart, and the spirit – Shakespeare enacted by a full gamut of performers from the novice to the professional. Looking back on the decade during which I’ve helped lead the Great River Shakespeare Festival, my gratitude is abundant and impossible to adequately express. We have fought and struggled, confronted insurmountable obstacles, and soared to unexpected heights. As a not-for-profit arts organization in America, we’ll continue to struggle . . . it’s simply the way of the world for all of us who have chosen to dedicate our lives to work in the nonprofit sector. But the fact that we’re still here ten years later is an indication that so much of what we’ve accomplished in Winona is on track. For me, the most affirming evidence of our success is that last season’s production of King Lear attracted nearly as many playgoers as did our riotous and bawdy The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged]. The appetite for these stirring, life-changing stories that we hoped to awaken in people when we first brought Shakespeare’s plays to Winona has taken root and is growing. The message I’ll carry with me into the future is a resounding, “we’re ready – and ready to grow right alongside you.” Who to thank for this decade? So very, very many. Will Kitchen, Eric Sorensen, Darrell Krueger, Judith Ramaley, Gary Evans, Tedd Morgan. The people who have served on our Board of Directors; the legion of volunteers who have stepped forward to fill in the gaps. Our individual, business, and corporate 2013 Company photo by Kathy Greden Christenson 1 welcome continued donors and sponsors. The hundreds of company members who have given of themselves and helped establish our national reputation for excellence. The friends we have lost along the way: Rosemary Ingham, Jack and Sue Cornwell, John Edstrom. But I think if there were one person I would choose to dedicate this season to, it would have to be Karen Fawcett, who will retire in September as a long-standing member of the GRSF Board of Directors. Karen defines generosity and commitment to the community she calls home. She is indefatigable, and her passion — for her family, for Winona, for her numerous causes, and for the Great River Shakespeare Festival — knows no bounds. Were it not for Karen, our Friends of Will volunteer organization would not be the vibrant, expansive force for good it has become in these last ten years. Karen and her husband OJ have welcomed GRSF company members into their home (including our annual school residency team of artist-teachers), provided picnics on the green for friends and family, given generously in so many visible and invisible ways, and epitomized what I have come to think of as the spirit of the community that invited us to make their home our home. It is to Karen that I dedicate my work – and all of our work – this season, for without Karen, and so many people like her, there simply would be no Great River Shakespeare Festival. Thank you, Karen. Thank you, all. Welcome to Season Ten! Paul Barnes Artistic Director It all started with a phone call. Three people were planning to start a Shakespeare festival in a small Minnesota town. A theatre friend said I should convince them that Winona was the place, and it seemed like a good idea to me! After talking to lots of people, the city came together and then the magic happened. – Will Kitchen, Original Board Member When you think the big banks have you outnumbered, do what Henry V would do... Underway, their vessel is beset by a raging tempest, resulting in a shipwreck that separates them on the coast of Illyria. Believing each other to be dead, they both set out to find their way in a strange and unknown land. In Illyria, the Countess Olivia is in mourning for the deaths of her father and brother and is left to manage her estate and household. The Countess has several suitors, including Orsino, Duke of Illyria, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek, a foolish country gentleman and companion to Sir Toby Belch, Olivia’s ne’er-do-well uncle. Twelfth Night, or What You Will was most likely written in 1601, around the time Shakespeare was finishing Hamlet. The first documented performance, 2 February 1602, comes from the Diary of John Manningham. “At our feast we had a play called Twelfth Night, or What You Will, much like The Comedy of Errors.” The play is difficult to track as records only reveal four performances in the 17th century. Perhaps one of the most interesting myths surrounding the play is that on Twelfth Night, 1601, Shakespeare’s company performed an unknown play for Queen Elizabeth I and a Duke Virginio Orsino. This begs the questions: Is Twelfth Night’s Duke Orsino based on this man? Was the play that was performed in fact, Twelfth Night? as the story unfolds: The distraught Viola, seeking safety in an unfamiliar country, disguises herself as a boy, adopting the name Cesario. She joins Duke Orsino’s court and quickly becomes part of his inner circle. Lady Olivia, with whom the Duke is madly in love, scorns his attempts to woo her, claiming she “cannot love him.” Having gained much faith in his new servant, Orsino implores Cesario to bear his messages to the Countess Olivia, hoping she may respond to his unusually female yet boyish disposition. — Conner Wilson, 2013 GRSF Directing Intern Christopher Gerson and Michael Fitzpatrick Director Paul Mason Barnes ** Directing Intern Conner Wilson Scenic Designer R. Henry's son, the rebellious Prince Hal, now King Henry V, has begun his reign. The young King is plagued by guilt inherited from his father, who seized the crown from King Richard II, thereby disrupting the anointed royal blood line. Henry V seeks the means to expiate his father’s sins and his own wastrel past, spent at the Boar's Head Inn with the drunken Sir John Falstaff and a band of petty thieves. In order to restore his reputation, Henry V has renounced the friends of his youth and now looks across the Channel to France and the dukedoms of Burgundy, as rightfully his to inherit but held captive by France. The largely untried King holds council with the clergy and his lords to solicit their advice. as the story unfolds: The clergy discuss the Salic Law, a preventive measure instilled by the French during King Edward III’s reign to keep him from lawfully inheriting the French crown via the female line when their king died without an heir. The Archbishop of Canterbury informs the council that this law is moot as the land Salic is in Germany, and therefore France cannot claim this law as theirs. Henry is also urged to war in remembrance of his great ancestors, Edward III and the Black Prince of Wales, who fought victorious battles in France (Crecy Battle). As his advisors argue, Henry is visited by the arrogant French ambassadors who deliver to him an insulting gift. Meanwhile, at the Boar’s Head Inn, Sir John Falstaff, recently abandoned by King Henry, lies gravely ill. context: The prologue invites the audience to use its imagination to endow the “wooden O” with the play's forthcoming events. This famous line has led scholars to believe the play to have been performed by the Lord Chamberlains’ Men in their new theater, the Globe, in 1599. The play is also part of a cycle of English history plays written by Shakespeare, specifically following King Henry IV Part One and Part Two. The play was printed in 1600. sources: Other than popular Elizabethan knowledge of the warrior king with which Shakespeare would have been familiar, most of the action of King Henry V is drawn from Raphael Holinshed’s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland, published in 1577. Edward Hall’s The Union of the Two Noble and Illustre Families Lancaster and York, published in 1550, may have also served as source material. Shakespeare’s King Henry V bears remarkable similarity to an anonymous play entitled The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth: Containing the Honourable Battell of Agin-court, printed in 1598. — Tessara Morgan, 2013 GRSF Directing Intern Director James Edmondson ** Directing Intern Tessara Morgan Scenic Designer R. The Shakespeare festival has both driven my interest in Shakespeare and shown me a unique and special sense of community. As a high school student reading Shakespeare for the first time in 2003, it kindled a curiosity and thirst for Shakespeare that continues. Ushering, listening to concerts on the green, going to discussions, seeing the plays several times, and chatting with Paul Barnes in Target (thanks for doing Lear!!!) gave me an appreciation for true involvement and community. On March 27, 2011 the Great River Shakespeare Festival announced the Setting the Stage Campaign, an initiative for organizational growth and longevity. Campaign members made a three-year pledge or one-time gift of a minimum of $450 to help the Festival increase its working capital and create an operating reserve to keep the Festival in Winona for a long time to come. We surpassed our $1.6 million goal at the Callithump last July! Many thanks to our supporters and campaign members for keeping GRSF around for years to come. Thomas E. Winkler Maureen Worden Laurie Ziliak & Todd Graff I discovered a whole body of knowledge that I knew very little about when my wife and I experienced our first Great River Shakespeare Festival performance. It was Season One’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. I realized that Shakespeare, performed by this acting company, was relevant, intriguing, engaging, and compelling. We are now huge fans of GRSF. After having seen scores of performances and having read seventeen of the plays, I am filled with appreciation for the genius of Mr. Shakespeare, the richness of his language, and the humanity of his characters. – Peter Flick, Retired Principal, Winona Senior High School Great River Shakespeare Collegium Founder Please ask any staff member how to donate to our summer giving campaign! or contact us at: 507.474.9375 or [email protected] 41 World Culture | Extreme Sports | Environment | Adventure January 22 - 26, 2014 July 6, 2013 Muse of Fire Preview Screening This unique feature documentary follows two actors as they travel the world to find out everything they can about tackling the greatest writer of them all. In our first ten years of bringing Shakespeare’s plays to Southeastern Minnesota, our audiences have heard thousands and thousands of some of the most beautiful, delicious, incisive, and inspiring words in the English language. The images on this page represent all 21 productions from our first nine years of work — and speak volumes in and of themselves, without benefit of accompanying commentary or dialogue — just as a good photo (or painting) should! This year, to complete our first decade of work, we return to Twelfth Night and introduce Festival audiences to King Henry V, bringing the total number of Great River Shakespeare Festival professional company productions to 23. If you look at these photos and identify productions you didn’t get to see but wish you had, just imagine what Decade Two at the Great River Shakespeare Festival will bring. You won’t want to miss a moment of our second ten years. photo credits – actors: Andrew Carlson, Aya Cash, Brian Frederick, Brian White, Carla Noack, Chris Mixon, Chris Sheard, Christopher Gerson, Christopher Hirsh, Corey Allen, David Coral, Doug Scholz‑Carlson, Evan Fuller, Jonathan Gillard Daly, Kate Fonville, Kim Martin-Cotten, Laura Coover, Marcus Truschinski, Michael Fitzpatrick, Rob Eigenbrod, Shanara Gabrielle, Stephanie Lambourn, Tarah Flanagan, Zachary Michael Fine plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Winter’s Tale (2004); Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing (2005); Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night (2006); As You Like It, Macbeth (2007), The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of The Shrew (2008); The Tempest, Love’s Labour’s Lost (2009); Othello, The Comedy of Errors, The Daly News (2010); Henry IV, Part 1, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Fantasticks (2011); King Lear, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged] (2012) photographers: Alec Wild, Kathy Greden Christenson, Michal Daniel 47 season 10 at a glance/free concerts Featured Events Festival Weekends continued Will’s Opening Weekend: Celebrate the first weekend of the Festival with three great parties: opening night with the cast, Saturday afternoon Directors’ Reception, and Sunday afternoon 10th anniversary picnic celebration and special concert on the green. $10 WOW button gets you into all three parties.
