Installation Guide and Setup The following guide is intended to provide installation instructions for Java and Coeus Premium 4.5.1. You must have Java installed first before installing Coeus Premium. Java Recommendations: *See Important Notes Below Operating System: Windows Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) Linux Java Version Recommended: Java 7.x (1.7.x) Java 7.x (1.7.x) Java 7.x (1.7.x) IMPORTANT NOTES BEFORE STARTING: General Users: x If you do not have administrative privileges to install software on your computer, please contact your department’s IT support staff for assistance. IT Support Staff: x Please have the user log on to his/her computer and then perform the installation and setup IMPORTANT NOTES: Java 7 (1.7.45): If you do not have the latest version of Java 1.7 update 45 installed on your computer you may receive an error message stating “Application Blocked by Security Settings” and will be unable to open Coeus. To resolve this error please update the Java 1.7 JRE to update 45, which may be found here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html NOTE: After you update Java and open Coeus you will receive a message asking “Do you want to run this application?” This is normal and you will need to click “Run” to proceed to Coeus. Windows – Java 7.x (1.7.x) Installation 1. Download the latest Java 7.x (1.7.x) JRE. a. Go to the following URL and scroll down to find the latest version of Java 7.x (1.7.x) http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7downloads-1880261.html b. Toggle the License Agreement radio button to select "Accept License Agreement". c. Choose the download link that reflects your operating system platform. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 2 d. Once you have downloaded the installation file, double-click it to start the Java installation. e. Click the “Install” button to proceed with the installation and Java will begin installing. f. Click the “Close” button once the Java installation has completed. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 3 III. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) - Java 7.x (1.7) Installation 1. Download the latest Java 7.x (1.7.x) JRE. a. Go to the following page, find Java 7.x (1.7.x) JRE, and click the JRE download button http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html : b. Toggle the radio button on the License Agreement to select "Accept License Agreement". c. Choose the download link that reflects your operating system platform. For Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8, there are two options: a compressed .tar file and a .dmg installation file. Click the .dmg installation file download link to install Java without having to decompress first. d. Once you have downloaded the .dmg installation package, open your Downloads folder and then double-click the .dmg file. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 4 e. Double-click on the icon to begin the installation. f. Click “Continue” to proceed with the Java installation and then click “Install” to start the installation. g. Enter credentials for elevated rights to allow the installation to begin (see your IT support representative). h. Click the “Close” button once the Java installation has completed. Linux - Java 7.x (1.7.x) Installation Linux/BSD installs will need to have the IcedTea Java Web Start installed and you must manually open the JRE after download. The following links may be helpful in assisting you in installing Java on Linux: Linux General: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml Linux Mint: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1091 Ubuntu: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java NOTE: After Java has been installed, follow the same directions in Section VI to install Coeus. The only difference you may notice is that you will be prompted to open the coeus.jnlp file with “IcedTea Java Web Start” instead of the “Java Web Start Launcher”. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 6 V. Coeus Installation 1. Once the recommended version of Java has been installed, the Coeus installation can be downloaded and installed. You will only need to install Coeus once. a. Open a web browser and go to the following URL: https://coeus.umd.edu/coeus/coeus.jnlp b. Depending on your browser’s settings, you may choose to open or save the coeus.jnlp file. Choose open or double-click on the saved file to begin the Coeus installation using the defaulted Java Web Start Launcher. c. The Coeus installation will then proceed and create a shortcut on your desktop. d. When the installation has completed, Coeus will open. NOTE: Coeus requires your Directory ID credentials for access The recommended version of Java 1.7.x (7.x) forces a login prompt in order to access Coeus. In previous versions of Java 1.6.x (6.x) you may have been automatically passed directly into Coeus without prompting for a username and password. e. You will be prompted with Java window asking “Do you want to run this application?”. This is normal and you will need to click the “Run” button to proceed to Coeus. You may optionally check the “Do not show this again…” checkbox if would like to skip this message each time you open Coeus. f. Enter your Directory ID credentials. g. Coeus will then open once you have authenticated. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 7 VI. Troubleshooting 1. I am receiving an error message reporting “Application Blocked by Security Settings” and cannot open Coeus. a. Due to recent updates in Java, you may receive this error message when trying to open Coeus. b. Update to the latest version of the Java 1.7 JRE (update 45) to resolve this message. To update go to the following URL, find Java 7.x (1.7.x) JRE, and click the JRE download button http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html : See installation sections in this document for Windows, Mac, and Linux for more information. c. NOTE: After you update Java you will receive a message asking “Do you want to run this application?”. h. This is normal and you will need to click the “Run” button to proceed to Coeus. You may optionally check the “Do not show this again…” checkbox if would like to skip this message each time you open Coeus. d. We suggest also checking for any additional outdated versions of Java that may be installed on your computer and remove any of those instances as well if possible. For 64-bit Windows PCs, it is possible to have different versions of Java installed; both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. To see if you have more than one version of Java (x64 or x86) installed on Windows go to Control Panel > Programs and Features. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 8 2. Coeus used to come up right away after clicking on the shortcut but now I am forced to login every time. Can I change this back? a. The currently recommended version of Java 1.7.x (7.x) forces a login prompt before accessing Coeus and does not automatically authenticate you. In previous versions of Java 1.6.x (6.x) you may have been automatically authenticated and passed directly into Coeus without prompting for a username and password if your computer used the same directory ID and password. 3. The Coeus Shortcut is Missing from your Desktop a. Open the Java Control Panel 1. Windows: Start > Control Panel > Java Mac OS X: Depending on the OS X version: - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Other > Java or - Applications > Utilities > Java 2. On the General Tab, under Temporary Internet Files select View… 3. Highlight the Coeus line and click the Install Shortcuts button. 4. Navigate back to your desktop and you should now see a Coeus icon. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 9 4. “Unable to launch the application” Error This can happen for a number of reasons and may require Java and/or Coeus to be reinstalled. a. Ensure the Recommended Version(s) of Java are Installed x Open the Java Control Panel Windows: Start > Control Panel > Java Mac OS X: Depending on OS X version: - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Other > Java OR - Applications > Utilities > Java x On the Java Tab, Select View x You should see Java JRE 1.7.x listed and enabled. It’s possible you may see multiple versions of Java listed. If no other applications require Java 1.6.x or earlier please uninstall them and check for updates to Java 1.7.x . b. Check the Java Cache Viewer for a Coeus Entry x On the General Tab, under Temporary Internet Files click View… Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 10 x You should see at least one entry for Coeus in the Java Cache Viewer. If you DO NOT see any entries for Coeus, you may need to reinstall the JAR files by clicking on the following link: https://coeus.umd.edu/coeus/coeus.jnlp x If you DO see a Coeus entry and are still unsuccessful in accessing Coeus, highlight the Coeus entry and click the “X” to remove. x Change “Show:” to Deleted Applications, highlight the Coeus line, and then click the “X” button to remove. x Delete the Coeus shortcut x Then use the following link to reinstall the JAR files: https://coeus.umd.edu/coeus/coeus.jnlp x A new Coeus shortcut will be recreated on your desktop. Double-click it to verify you can bring up Coeus. If you are still having trouble you may need to restart your computer and try again. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup on your desktop if still present. Page 11 5. “Unknown Error Message, Please Contact Coeus Support Team” Error a. After installing Coeus, if you see the “Unknown Error Message, Please Contact Coeus Support Team” error and it appears without getting a prompt to login then a Coeus settings file (CoeusJaas.conf) will need to be updated. b. In Windows, click your start menu c. In the search field, type “CoeusJaas” and a result will appear. d. Open “CoeusJaas.conf” in Notepad or a comparable text editor. e. On Line 7, you will see “useTicketCache=true;”. Modify this to “useTicketCache=false;” f. Save and close the “CoeusJaas.conf” file. b. When you open Coeus, you will be prompted to enter your Directory ID and password. Coeus Installation Guide and Setup Page 12 6. Uninstall/Remove Coeus If you would like to uninstall/remove Coeus perform the following steps. a. Delete the Coeus Shortcut from your Desktop and/or Shortcut Menu b. Open the Java Control Panel 1. Windows: Start > Control Panel > Java Mac OS X: Depending on the OS X version: - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Other > Java or - Applications > Utilities > Java 2. On the General Tab, under Temporary Internet Files select View… 3. Highlight the Coeus line under “Show: Applications” and click the “X” button to remove. 4. Change “Show:” to Deleted Applications, highlight the Coeus line, and then click the “X” button to remove. 7. Need More Help?
