What software does
Coeus Premium
need to run on PC?
•
Java 1.8 Web Start (J2SE Runtime Environment 8.0) needs to be installed on the
user’s machine (Windows 7 or 8) in order for the fully functional version of Coeus,
Coeus Premium 4.5.1P2, to run.
• No other software needs to be installed for Coeus to run.
• I have not tested Coeus on Windows 8.
What software does • As of this writing on 7/29/15, Java 1.8 update 51 should be installed on the user’s

Java 1.8 is part of the DeSC pushes for PC machines. However, the following could

your machine has Java 1.8, you’ll be able to run Coeus.
Coeus Premium issues with Java 1.8 and Windows or Mac
When Coeus is saving or completing a task like submitting a proposal, usually a spinning circle appears to let
you know that Coeus is working. However, with Java 1.8, there isn’t always a spinning circle. Please be
patient.

Possible workarounds include:
- upgrade to Java 1.8 update 51
- downgrade the OS on the Mac to a pre-Yosemite version;
- run the application from a script installed on the Mac which
executes the application with the 'nosplash' option
My Coeus icon disappeared or stopped working on my PC
For PCs: If your Coeus icon disappeared or no longer works, launch Coeus from the “Launch Coeus
Premium” link on the Coeus Home Page so that you can continue working. To get your icon back or get
your icon to work again, try the steps below:
1. If the icon disappeared, go to step 2. Otherwise, if the old icon isn’t working, delete the old icon
(Right click on the icon, select Delete).
2. Close Coeus if you have it open.
3. Then press the Windows key on your keyboard and the letter r at the same time. The Run screen
will open.
4. Cut and paste this into the Run menu, changing “kburkhar” to your user name (i.e. your NET ID).

5. Click OK and you will then see the a 6.0 folder labeled as “6.0”
6. Delete the 6.0 folder (Right click on the folder, select Delete).
7. Then go to the Coeus Home Page, click on the “Launch Coeus Premium” link and Coeus will put the
icon back on the desktop, either automatically (without asking you) or by asking if you want to install
the icon (click on yes).

My Coeus icon disappeared or stopped working on my Mac
For Macs: If your Coeus icon disappeared or no longer works, launch Coeus from the “Launch Coeus
Premium” link on the Coeus Home Page so that you can continue working. To get your icon back or get
your icon to work again, there are TWO things you can try. If you are running Mavericks or Yosemite, you
will definitely have to try Option #2.
Thing to try #1:
1. If the icon disappeared, go to step 2. Otherwise, if the old icon isn’t working, delete the old icon(s)
from all places (your desktop and your dock).
2. Close Coeus if you have it open.
3. Then follow these instructions on the Java web page to delete your Java cache.

4. Then go to the Coeus Home Page, click on the “Launch Coeus Premium” link and Coeus will put the
icon back on the desktop, either automatically (without asking you) or by asking if you want to install
the icon (click on yes).
Thing to try #2 (especially if you are running Mavericks or Yosemite):
1) Drag the broken Coeus icon from the Desktop, to the Trash can
2) Open your web browser of choice ( in this example, the choice is Firefox )
3) Navigate to:http://www.princeton.edu/orpa/coeus/
4) Click link to Launch Coeus Premium
5) Popup requesting how to handle the .jnlp file will likely appear:

7) Click OK

10) Launch System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General
11) Click Open Anyway to unblock OSX from launching coeus.jnlp
12) Coeus launches, icon appears on Desktop.

How to launch Coeus Production
1. If you don't have a Coeus icon on your desktop: From the Coeus Home Page, click on the “Premium,
Production version” link to launch Coeus 4.5.1P2.
2. Click on Run or Yes or Allow to any “warning” messages you may see.

b. It’s ok to say Yes, Ok, Run, or Allow to a message like this one in the screenshot below.
There’s a checkbox labeled “Do not this again for apps from the publisher and location
above.” Check it if you don’t want to see the warning again until the next upgrade.
3. The logon screen should appear. Enter your LDAP user name and password (the same password you
use for checking your email and logging onto your workstation).
4. If the program asks you to if you want to install a desktop icon, click on yes. However, it may not
ask you—it might just install the icon on the desktop without any prompting from you.
5. If the icon does not appear on the desktop, follow the instructions in the “My Coeus icon
disappeared or stopped working—how do I get it back?” section below.
How to launch Coeus TRAIN
Users can have both the production version of Coeus on their desktop and the training version, called Coeus
TRAIN. To install TRAIN on the desktop, go to the Launch Coeus Training page and click on the “Launch
Coeus Premium, Training version” link. Coeus will either ask you if you want to install the icon on the
desktop, or it will install the icon automatically. If neither of those scenarios occur, then refer to the “My
Coeus icon disappeared or stopped working—how do I get it back?” section below.
