IV. Linux - Java 7.x (1.7.x) Installation
Linux/BSD installs will need to have the IcedTea Java Web Start installed and you must manually open the JRE
after download.
The following links may be helpful in assisting you in installing Java on Linux:
Linux General: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml
Linux Mint:

Ubuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java
NOTE: After Java has been installed, follow the same directions in Section VI to install Coeus. The only
difference you may notice is that you will be prompted to open the coeus.jnlp file with “IcedTea Java Web Start”
instead of the “Java Web Start Launcher”.

V. Coeus Installation
1. Once the recommended version of Java has been installed, the Coeus installation can be downloaded and
installed. You will only need to install Coeus once.
a. Open a web browser and go to the following URL:
https://coeus.umd.edu/coeus/coeus.jnlp
b. Depending on your browser’s settings, you may choose to open or save the coeus.jnlp file. Choose open
or double-click on the saved file to begin the Coeus installation using the defaulted Java Web Start
Launcher.
c. The Coeus installation will then proceed and create a shortcut
on your desktop.
d. When the installation has completed, Coeus will open.
NOTE: Coeus requires your Directory ID credentials for access
The recommended version of Java 1.7.x (7.x) forces a login prompt in order to access Coeus. In previous
versions of Java 1.6.x (6.x) you may have been automatically passed directly into Coeus without
prompting for a username and password.
e. You will be prompted with Java window asking “Do you want to run this application?”. This is normal
and you will need to click the “Run” button to proceed to Coeus. You may optionally check the “Do not
show this again…” checkbox if would like to skip this message each time you open Coeus.
f.
Enter your Directory ID credentials.
g. Coeus will then open once you have authenticated.

VI. Troubleshooting
1. I am receiving an error message reporting “Application Blocked by Security Settings” and cannot open Coeus.
a. Due to recent updates in Java, you may receive this error message when trying to open Coeus.
b. Update to the latest version of the Java 1.7 JRE (update 45) to resolve this message.
To update go to the following URL, find Java 7.x (1.7.x) JRE, and click the JRE download button
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
:
See installation sections in this document for Windows, Mac, and Linux for more information.
c. NOTE: After you update Java you will receive a message asking “Do you want to run this application?”.
h. This is normal and you will need to click the “Run” button to proceed to Coeus. You may optionally
check the “Do not show this again…” checkbox if would like to skip this message each time you open
Coeus.
d. We suggest also checking for any additional outdated versions of Java that may be installed on your
computer and remove any of those instances as well if possible. For 64-bit Windows PCs, it is possible to
have different versions of Java installed; both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. To see if you have more
than one version of Java (x64 or x86) installed on Windows go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.

2. Coeus used to come up right away after clicking on the shortcut but now I am forced to login every time. Can I
change this back?
a. The currently recommended version of Java 1.7.x (7.x) forces a login prompt before accessing Coeus and
does not automatically authenticate you. In previous versions of Java 1.6.x (6.x) you may have been
automatically authenticated and passed directly into Coeus without prompting for a username and
password if your computer used the same directory ID and password.
3. The Coeus Shortcut is Missing from your Desktop
a. Open the Java Control Panel
1. Windows: Start > Control Panel > Java
Mac OS X: Depending on the OS X version:
- Apple Menu > System Preferences > Other > Java
or
- Applications > Utilities > Java
2. On the General Tab, under Temporary Internet Files select View…
3. Highlight the Coeus line and click the Install Shortcuts button.
4. Navigate back to your desktop and you should now see a Coeus icon.

4. “Unable to launch the application” Error
This can happen for a number of reasons and may require Java and/or Coeus to be reinstalled.
a. Ensure the Recommended Version(s) of Java are Installed
x Open the Java Control Panel
Windows:
Start > Control Panel > Java
Mac OS X:
Depending on OS X version:
- Apple Menu > System Preferences > Other > Java OR
- Applications > Utilities > Java
x On the Java Tab, Select View
x
You should see Java JRE 1.7.x listed and enabled. It’s possible you may see multiple versions of Java
listed. If no other applications require Java 1.6.x or earlier please uninstall them and check for
updates to Java 1.7.x .
b. Check the Java Cache Viewer for a Coeus Entry
x On the General Tab, under Temporary Internet Files click View…
Coeus Installation Guide and Setup
Page 10
x
You should see at least one entry for Coeus in the Java Cache Viewer. If you DO NOT see any entries
for Coeus, you may need to reinstall the JAR files by clicking on the following link:
https://coeus.umd.edu/coeus/coeus.jnlp
x
If you DO see a Coeus entry and are still unsuccessful in accessing Coeus, highlight the Coeus entry
and click the “X” to remove.
x
Change “Show:” to Deleted Applications, highlight the Coeus line, and then click the “X” button to
remove.
x
Delete the Coeus shortcut
x
Then use the following link to reinstall the JAR files: https://coeus.umd.edu/coeus/coeus.jnlp
x
A new Coeus shortcut
will be recreated on your desktop. Double-click it to verify you can
bring up Coeus. If you are still having trouble you may need to restart your computer and try again.
