Introduction to the Teacher
I. On Administration of Tests:
Please instruct your students to read all directions carefully. Every test is similar, i.e., it is in the same vein as the others,
but may not have the exact same directions. Give each student approximately thirty minutes to take each test.
II.Vocabulary and Derivatives:
Most of the chapter tests require students to provide a complete dictionary entry for each of the vocabulary
words. This means that students will need to supply endings, gender, and translation as appropriate. Students
may provide derivatives that vary from what is provided in the answer key. To check whether a derivative is
correct you may want to look up the English word in a dictionary that lists the word’s roots. To encourage
students to think beyond the printed page, acceptable derivatives should not include the Latin meaning.
III.Scoring:
All tests are based on a 100-point system. The scoring (points per question) are suggestions only and each
teacher may determine how to grade each test. It is appropriate to allow partial credit on some questions.
About the Author
Deirdre holds a BA in Human Communication from Abilene Christian University
in Abilene, Texas. She has taught grammar school, middle school, and high school
Latin classes; individually tutors home-schooled Latin students; has taught Latin
to home-school groups; and is presently in her fourth year as the Latin instructor at
Providence Classical Academy in Abilene. Her students frequently receive honors on
the Elementary Latin Exam, National Latin Exam, and National Mythology Exam.

My chief objection
to a quarrel,
Chesterton wrote,

Logic is a fascinating subject for students in
middle school or high school. As a fundamental
part of the trivium, logic study will impart
to students the skills needed to craft accurate
statements and identify the flawed arguments found
so frequently in editorials, commercials, newspapers, journals, and every other media. We regard the
mastery of logic as a “paradigm subject” by which we evaluate, assess, and learn other subjects—it is a
sharp knife with which we can carve and shape all manner of wood. Mastery of logic is a requisite skill for
mastering other subjects.
There are several branches of logic, and our three levels of curriculum focus on teaching informal and
formal logic, as well as supplying students with the tools to create their own logical arguments. The three
texts are modular, and while we generally recommend that students begin with informal logic study in The
Art of Argument, the following two texts, The Discovery of Deduction and The Argument Builder, can be
used in any order. Each of these logic courses recognizes that students are living in the twenty-first century
