Pt A 2007 Sec 06 pp1-21 16/11/06 Refer catalogue IMS-F 11:46 AM Page 15 Electronic soft starters IMS2 for motors to 800 / 1500 kW @ 400 V AC and 690 V AC Standards and approvals: AS/NZS 3947-4-2, C-tick, CE, CSA, UL Overview The IMS2 series is a multi-microprocessor based soft starter – motor management system designed for the control and protection of motors from 7.5 through to 1500 kW @ 400 V AC and 690 V AC. Available as standard in an IP 54 format to 132 kW and designed specifically for the Australian market, the IMS2 incorporates all motor and system protection functions one would expect from a ‘high end’ soft starter together with numerous additional controls, monitoring and protection functions aimed specifically at reducing installation costs. The IMS2 is further complemented by an innovative mechanical design, extensive fault and status indication, programmable digital inputs and outputs and a variety of ‘human interface’ options to make it the world’s first truly general-purpose soft starter. IMS2-0018-V5-F1-E5 For automated plants, the IMS2 also offers RS 485 serial communications and field bus connectivity as standard. Motor starting IMS2 soft starters provide the user a selection of starting and stopping modes as standard. The ability to select and tailor the starting format ensures the full benefits of soft starting can be achieved in any industrial motor starting application. 6 Standard starting modes Constant current The constant current start mode is of particular advantage in installations where it is necessary to limit the maximum starting current. The starting current is quickly ramped up to a user programmed maximum level and starter output voltage is then dynamically adjusted to ensure the programmed maximum starting current is maintained irrespective of motor and load characteristics. The constant current start mode is best suited to high inertia applications. Current ramp The current ramp start mode is ideally suited to those applications that exhibit a variable start torque requirement. It allows the user to program an initial start current, maximum start current and start ramp time to ensure electrical and mechanical stresses are minimised irrespective of motor loading. In generator set applications, the current ramp start mode acts to minimise shock loading on the generator, providing more time for the governor to respond to the changing load conditions. Torque control The IMS2 torque control start mode provides a more linear start characteristic and enables extended starting times to be achieved in light load applications. In general, it provides a further reduction in mechanical stress thereby extending the maintenance interval and reducing maintenance costs. Kickstart The IMS2 kickstart feature is of particular advantage in applications that present a high frictional starting characteristic. It provides an initial ‘short duration’ high torque pulse to overcome the high starting friction and then reverts to accelerating the load smoothly. 6 - 15 Pt A 2007 Sec 06 pp1-21 16/11/06 11:46 AM Page 16 Electronic motor starters IMS2 series overview Standards and approvals: AS/NZS 3947-4-2. C-tick, CE, CSA, UL Standard stopping modes Soft stop During soft stop, the IMS2 gradually decreases output voltage enabling driven machines to be stopped gently. The soft stop function is of particular advantage in applications where machinery or product can be adversely affected by sudden stopping. Pump stop The pump stop feature acts to minimise pressure surging during the stop cycle of pump operation. The IMS2 analyses motor characteristics as they change during stopping and generates control commands to provide smooth deceleration of the motor. Soft motor braking For applications that may require more braking torque than that achievable with D.C. braking, the standard IMS2 can be configured for soft motor braking functionality. The soft braking function requires the addition of an AC 3 rated contactor. 6 Protection functions Pre-start circuit analysis and configuration To prevent damage from incorrect installation or supply related problems, the IMS2 performs an automatic systems analysis before each start and self calibrates accordingly. During pre-start analysis, the IMS2 monitors and configures itself for; supply circuit, voltage, frequency, phase sequence, motor circuit and connection method, internal power circuits and control connections. Run-time motor and system protection From the moment a start has been initiated, through to completion of a soft stop, the IMS2 monitors and protects against a variety of motor and system conditions. Protection features include: ■ Programmable I2t motor thermal model ■ Motor thermistor temperature ■ Excess start time ■ Phase loss and phase asymmetry (line and load side) ■ Phase sequence ■ Electronic shearpin (instantaneous over-current) ■ Under load (under-current) ■ Auxiliary trip input ■ Supply frequency ■ Starter over-temperature ■ RS 485 failure Motor thermistor protection The IMS2 starter provides a direct input for standard (PTC) motor thermistors. Thermistor protection is used to detect excessive temperature in the motor windings caused by stalled conditions or inadequate ventilation. Excess start time The excess start time protection feature will trip the IMS2 if the start extends beyond the programmed limit, thereby indicating a stalled condition during start or that the start torque requirement has increased since commissioning. Phase loss and phase asymmetry The IMS2 offers a current based phase asymmetry protection feature for detection of faults in the supply or motor circuit. Programmable I2t motor thermal model Programmable thermal modelling makes standard motor protection systems, that are set purely on the basis of motor full load current and operate to a fixed trip curve, obsolete. The programmable thermal model allows the user to program actual motor thermal characteristics, thus permitting full utilization of the motor without fear of motor burn out. 6 - 16 The IMS2 monitors all three phases continuously and calculates the differential between highest and lowest phase currents. A trip condition will occur when the user adjustable phase assymetry level is reached. Pt A 2007 Sec 06 pp1-21 16/11/06 11:46 AM Page 17 Electronic motor starters IMS2 series overview Standards and approvals: AS/NZS 3947-4-2, C-Tick, CE, CSA, UL Phase sequence protection Trip log IMS2 soft starters provide a user configurable phase sequence protection facility. This can be configured to enable operation in the following modes: ■ Forward phase sequence ■ Reverse phase sequence ■ Forward and reverse phase sequence i.e. no phase sequence protection. Phase sequence protection is generally applied in rotation direction sensitive applications such as pumps, compressors etc. The 8-position fault trip log enables the user to review trip history, identify recurring problems and attend to issues that are affecting productivity. Electronic shearpin protection The electronic shearpin or instantaneous over-current protection feature ‘trips’ the IMS2 when the motor current exceeds a user programmed maximum level. This feature is used to detect a sudden increase in motor loading, which may represent a ‘stall’ or ‘locked rotor’, condition. Undercurrent protection The undercurrent or under-load protection feature ‘trips’ the IMS2 when the motor current falls below the user programmed minimum level. Undercurrent protection is used to detect a sudden decrease in motor loading, which may indicate a broken coupling between the motor and driven machine, a broken conveyor belt, loss of product or a dry pump. Auxiliary trip input The IMS2 offers an auxiliary trip input to permit direct connection of external fault detection devices, such as low pressure or no flow detectors, vibration sensors etc. Supply frequency error The IMS2 also monitors the supply frequency during run to ensure motors and generator sets are not inadvertently operated outside of their design parameters. Starter over-temperature protection Each power module within a force cooled IMS2 soft starter is protected against over-temperature conditions that may result from inadequate ventilation or blocked ventilation ports. Microtherm temperature sensors ‘trip’ the IMS2 when these over-temperature conditions are detected. RS 485 failure The IMS2 RS 485 serial link is provided with a user adjustable time-out function. The IMS2 will trip if the maximum allowable period of RS 485 serial inactivity has been exceeded. Restart delay To prevent inadvertent operator abuse of the starter and motor, the IMS2 provides a user adjustable restart delay feature. Settings of up to 2550 seconds are possible. Run-time trip warnings IMS2 soft starters provide a variety of run-time trip warnings thereby allowing machine operators to maximise plant productivity without fear of nuisance tripping. The high/low current and motor temperature flags may be assigned to individual output relays and these together with the 4-20 mA analogue output can integrate with external control and monitoring devices to form part of a closed loop process. IMS2 specialist features IP 54 standard to 132 kW IMS2 soft starters are provided in a standard IP 54 format to 132 kW. Just bolt it to the wall, connect the power and control cables, program it and start. No need to concern yourself with enclosure, bypass contactor, available space etc. Quick start set-up procedure Although the IMS2 offers the most advanced soft start, protection and interface functions presently available, they are pre-programmed such that operation can be achieved after completing the following 5 basic steps. ■ Connect 3 phase supply cables and earth ■ Connect motor cables and earth ■ Connect control supply ■ Program function 1, Motor Full Load Current ■ Press start Local/remote operation IMS2 soft starters can be controlled from keypad start, stop and reset pushbuttons, remote control input terminals or via the RS 485 serial link. RS 485 serial link For automated plants, the IMS2 also offers RS 485 serial link as standard. A variety of Fieldbus communication devices are available to further enhance system compatibility Line and inside delta motor connection IMS2 soft starters provide the flexibility of ‘line’ (3 wire) or ‘inside delta’ (6 wire) operation. In 6 wire mode the power semiconductors control phase current (approximately 58 % of line current) thereby allowing the selection of a smaller, more economical IMS2 soft starter. Advanced auto-reset functionality The IMS2 offers advanced auto-reset capabilities. Protection functions are grouped according to severity and type of fault. Through programming, the user may select individual fault groups that he/she feels should be auto-resettable to minimise site call out. In addition, the number of re-start attempts is also user programmable. Auto-off process timer The need to run the machine for a pre-defined period of time is a common requirement in many industrial applications. IMS2 soft starters provide an auto-off process timer that will shut the machine down when the programmed time (up to 25 hrs, 30 mins) has elapsed. No flow bypass timer The IMS2 provides a fully programmable auxiliary trip input that can be configured to provide no flow bypass functionality during soft start and soft stop. The no flow sensor may be connected directly to the auxiliary trip input. Bypassed operation The IMS2 retains all motor and system protection functions in bypassed mode to eliminate the need for additional protection devices. 6 - 17 6 Pt A 2007 Sec 06 pp1-21 16/11/06 11:46 AM Page 18 Electronic motor starters IMS2 series overview Standards and approvals: AS/NZS 3947-4-2, C-Tick, CE, CSA, UL Fire mode operation Adjustable power terminals When configured for fire mode operation a voltage free contact can be used to start the IMS2, if not already running, and continue operation ignoring the trip conditions specified in the emergency mode format. Opening the circuit across the programmable input ends the fire mode operation and enables normal operation. The busbars on models IMS2-0302 to IMS2-1574 can be user adjusted to provide four different input/output power terminal configurations. This facility further reduces cabinet space/size and is of particular advantage in satisfying specified cable entry and exit requirements. Thermal model decrement The IMS2 can be programmed to reduce its stored value of motor thermal memory to permit another start. Thermal model over-ride For those installations where an alternative form of motor protection is preferred, the IMS2 provides a thermal model over-ride facility to eliminate the possibility of conflict between the two devices. Analogue output The IMS2 provides a fully scaleable 4-20 mA analogue output that can be configured to represent motor current or motor thermal capacity. Starts counter 6 The IMS2 incorporates a register that counts the number of successful starts. This allows the operator to monitor machine use and program maintenance intervals. Programmable relays The IMS2 provides 3 user programmable output relays to enhance interface with external process and control devices. Programmable input The IMS2 provides a programmable input terminal that forms the basis of various specialist functions. These include parameter selection, auxiliary trip and emergency/fire mode operation. Dual parameter sets The IMS2 range of soft starters specifically caters for two- speed motors. Each IMS2 enables the user to program ‘low and high speed’ starting, stopping and protection parameters. Low or high-speed parameter selection is achieved via an external switch. In addition to the control of 2 speed motors the dual parameter setting facility may be utilized for ‘duty/standby’ applications. In such applications, a single IMS2 may be programmed to start, stop and protect 2 motors with similar or substantially different characteristics. This eliminates the need for additional protection devices. Emergency mode operation The IMS2 soft starter provides an emergency start facility (accessible through programming) for those situations when the cost of lost production out-weighs the potential cost of further equipment damage. IMS2 protection functions are grouped according to severity and type of fault. The user may choose to make the emergency mode applicable to individual fault groups or all faults as required. Keypad set-up procedure Quick and accurate set-up of the IMS2 is assured through a simple 4 button keypad data entry system. Simply select the function number, view the parameter setting, alter as required and press ‘store’. The program is saved to EEPROM to ensure it is maintained throughout periods of no control voltage or voltage dips. Catalogue number identification The IMS2 is available in a variety of different formats to ensure individual user requirements are totally satisfied. Models stocked by NHP are listed on page 6 - 19 and 6 - 20 of this catalogue. All other combinations are available on indent, POA. Password protection – access code The ability to set an access code ensures only selected, suitably qualified staff can adjust programming parameters. When used in conjunction with the ‘function lock’ facility, total program security is assured. IMS2 - 0018 - V5 - F1 - E5 Enclosure rating E0 = IP 00/Nema 0 E5 = IP 54/Nema 12 Function lock The function lock facility enables users to define the level of access available to others. The IMS2 function lock can be configured to provide ‘read/write’ or ‘read only’ access. Functionality F1 = 3 wire/6 wire capable Store/restore settings Three phase supply voltage The IMS2 provides users with the ability to load and store commissioned parameter settings into an internal register. This facility is provided in addition to the ability to restore factory default settings.
