5K40.05 Worlds Simplest Motor Abstract The worlds simplest motor is made up of a coiled copper wire which is connected to a battery and hangs over permanent magnet. The battery creates a voltage which cause current to flow through the wire. The magnetic field induced by the current loop opposes that of the permanent magnet causing the wire to spin. The worlds simplest motor shows how chemical and electrical energy can be converted into mechanical energy using only very simple components. Picture Equipment • World simplest motor • Coiled copper wire • C battery Procedure Insert the battery into the bottom of the motor then place the copper wire on top so that it hangs over the permanent magnet. Spin the wire to start the motor. If it slides to the side, bend one end of the wire to hold it in place. 1
