Probiotic for Oral and Immune Health

Support Healthy Bacteria in the Mouth
for Breath and Immune Support
The mouth is an entry point for pathogens as it comes into contact with billions of bacteria. If a healthy balance of oral
bacteria is thrown off by stress, exposure to disease or antibiotics, it can quickly lead to problems such as bad breath,
throat and ear infections. The microorganisms in our mouth are a first line of defense against pathogens and an important
part of maintaining healthy oral bacteria.
Streptococcus salivarius (S. salivarius) is one of the most numerous beneficial bacteria found in the mouth of healthy
individuals. However, only a small percent of people have S. salivarius with BLIS K12 activity. The K12 strain was originally
discovered as scientists tracked the oral bacteria of a healthy child that did not develop sore throats for several years.
Scientists found that this particular K12 strain of S. salivarius secretes powerful antimicrobial molecules called BLIS:
Bacteriocin-Like-Inhibitory Substances, with the ability to inhibit harmful bacteria such as the bacteria responsible for
bad breath, sore throat and other upper respiratory infections.
BLIS K12 is an advanced probiotic for the oral cavity (mouth) and upper respiratory tract. It is a specific strain of S. salivarius
with actions to help provide a natural long-term breath support while boosting our immune system’s natural defenses.
Why is BLIS K12 so unique?
Most probiotic bacteria, including S. salivarius, compete
with other microorganisms for space and nutrients in the
oral cavity and in this way, act to maintain a healthy balance
of oral bacteria. BLIS K12 works beyond competitive
inhibition. It secretes two anti-microbial proteins called
Salivaricin A and Salivaricin B which inhibit undesirable
bacteria, making it more effective at fighting off pathogens.(5)
When BLIS K12 enters the mouth, it attaches to cells in the
oral cavity and colonizes.(6) By colonizing, BLIS K12 crowds
out pathogenic bacteria, keeping them from adhering to
the host. The final antibacterial punch comes from the
production of BLIS molecules, Salivaricins A and B. Many
potential pathogens are susceptible to these Salivaricins,
including the bacteria that cause bad breath, sore throats,
and those that cause upper respiratory tract and ear
infections.(5)
The Halitosis Issue
Halitosis is the term given to bad breath. Studies have shown up to 50% of
people can suffer from halitosis.(1) Like body odor, it is a major source of
personal embarrassment and can severely affect social interactions.
There are a number of factors that contribute to bad breath including
metabolic disorders and poor diet choices, however the main source of bad
breath is due to an imbalance of bacteria residing in the oral cavity. Odiferous
species such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum and
Prevotella intermedia grow uncontrollably and produce malodorous by-products,
known as volatile sulfur com-pounds (VSCs) following metabolism of e.g.
amino acids. These VSCs are the basis for experiencing bad breath.
Advantages of
Furthermore, studies have found halitosis sufferers have lower numbers of
beneficial bacteria such as Streptococcus salivarius.(3) Therefore, reintroducing
these bacteria addresses the root cause of bad breath.
How does BLIS K12 Fight Bad Breath?
Typically, sufferer’s attempt to “mask” the odor with cosmetic products such as
mouth rinses, gums and sprays. Alternatively, various expensive and
complicated treatments involve the short-term reduction of the malodorous
bacteria (as well as good bacteria) from the mouth. However, their numbers
soon return to previous levels without structurally solving the problem.
• Activates in the mouth to support
healthy balance of bacteria
• Proprietary strain of bacteria with
potent BLIS antibacterial molecules:
Salivaricins A and B
Using the S. salivarius K12 probiotic increases beneficial S. salivarius levels in
the mouth as these microbes bind to human epithelial cells restoring a balance
of beneficial non-malodorous bacteria.(2) Studies (Figure 1), have shown
subsequent reduction in VSC levels from malodorous to more acceptable
levels as a result of taking S. salivarius K12 products daily for 14 days.(4)

dosing with S. salivarius BLIS K12.
Bad breath is mainly caused by the breakdown of proteins on the tongue by
certain bacteria, and the subsequent release of volatile sulfur compounds.
BLIS K12 inhibits these bacteria and therefore targets the source of bad breath
instead of just masking it.
By promoting a healthy balance of bacteria in the oral cavity –
BLIS K12 can help protect the gateway to our body’s health.
BLIS K12™ is a specific strain of S. salivarius that has been
shown in clinical trials and population-based studies to help
provide a natural resistance to harmful bacteria such as S.
Pyogenes, shown as a contributor to bacterial sore throats and
ear infections.(1,7) BLIS K12 promotes healthy levels of beneficial
oral microbes to support upper respiratory health and immune
health.*
Product Applications
Ideal applications for BLIS K12 are those that allow prolonged
contact with the mouth, such as:
• Chewable tablets or
lozenges
• Fast-melt tablets
• Powders
• Yogurt
• Ice cream
• Chewing gum
• Stick packs
