MindSpa Owner George Rozelle to Lead Study of Retired Professional Athletes
Suffering Post-Concussion Syndrome
Sarasota, FL – HPN Neurologic recently announced plans for a research study of retired NFL
and NHL athletes in Chicago and New York who are suffering symptoms of post-concussion
syndrome. George Rozelle, PhD, the owner of MindSpa based in Sarasota, is the principal
investigator for the study. HPN Neurologic develops clinical solutions to help professionals treat
traumatic brain injuries. The company is based in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
Dr. Rozelle is a licensed psychotherapist, Board certified neurotherapist and Diplomate in
Neurofeedback. After completing his Doctorate from the University of Florida in 1978, Dr. Rozelle
worked in various clinical and administrative positions where he developed expertise in using
brain wave training to help people deal with addiction.
The HPN study seeks to determine whether pulsed ultra-low power electric current EEG
Biofeedback is an effective treatment for symptoms of traumatic brain injury. EEG Biofeedback or
Neurofeedback is a learning strategy that enables individuals to alter their brain waves. The
acronym EEG refers to electroencephalograph which is the device used by clinicians to record
electrical impulses from the nerves located on the head. Biofeedback therapy has been used
since the 1960’s to help patients control physiological processes such as muscle tension, blood
pressure, perception of pain, and heart rate.
Some of the symptoms of traumatic brain injury include anxiety, depression, sleep disorders,
headaches, and emotional instability. The study could benefit far more than retired professional
athletes. Approximately 1.7 million people each year sustain a significant traumatic brain injury.
Another target group of concern is injured professionals serving in the military.
The other investigators for the HPN study include former NFL football player and CEO of HPN
Neurologic, Fred Willis, Galina Mindlin, MD, Alan Strohmayer, PhD, Elsa Baehr, PhD, and Corey
Feinberg, MA. Dr. Mindlin and Dr. Strohmayer are based in New York and Dr. Baehr and Mr.
Feinberg are based in Chicago.
MindSpa, the region’s mental fitness center, provides clinical programs and spa services that
enhance mental alertness and optimum health. Services include the region’s only floatation tank,
far infrared sauna therapy, biofeedback, neurofeedback, brain music therapy, neurobics
(exercises for the brain), acupuncture, cognitive longevity programs, computer-assisted brain
mapping, peak performance training, neurowave sensory immersion, and Nexalin treatments to
relieve the underlying causes of anxiety, depression and insomnia. Future plans include the
development of a program for veterans coping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and
an intensive outpatient addiction program.
Other MindSpa team members include Dr. Rebecca Merz, Dr. Rachel Toomim, AP, certified life
coach Darlene Coleman, office manager Darla Thixtun, and massage therapist Tina Meyer, LMT.
Charley Harraway, a former NFL professional football player, is affiliated with MindSpa as a brain
health coach.
