Methodology
MEDTOX Laboratories is excited to announce
the addition of a new quantitative test designed
to detect Bromo-DragonFly use.
Bromo-dragonfly is a powerful hallucinogenic
drug with mind-altering effects similar to that of
LSD. The chemical name of the drug is bromobenzodifuranyl-isopropylamine; the common
name, bromo-dragonfly, is based upon the
shape of the chemical
structure which can be
viewed as resembling a
dragonfly. The drug is
typically sold either as a
powder or spotted on
blotter paper.
Liquid Chromatography with
Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMS/MS)
As a hallucinogen, bromo-dragonfly possesses a
similar potency to that of LSD, with typical

doses ranging from 0.1 to 2 mg. However,
Suggested
reports indicate the duration of action of bromoReporting Limit 1.0 ng/mL
dragonfly is significantly longer, with some
reports indicating up to 36 hours of intoxication.
Bromo-dragonfly’s hallucinogenic effects are
believed mediated by its strong affinity for the 5-HT2A subtype of serotonin receptors. A
similar strong affinity for peripheral serotonin receptors is believed to induce prolonged and
severe vasoconstriction which has resulted in tissue necrosis following bromo-dragonfly use.
Bromo-dragonfly is explicitly illegal in many European countries, but is not formally scheduled
in the United States.
The MEDTOX Laboratories’ test for bromo-dragonfly is a fully validated quantitative procedure
with a detection limit of 1.0 ng/mL. The method utilizes a state of the art high performance
liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique.
The MEDTOX Laboratories urine test for bromo-dragonfly is a screen and conditional
confirmation procedure. Samples identified as potentially positive in initial testing will be
confirmed using a secondary procedure. Samples which undergo secondary confirmation
testing will incur an additional charge.
