Hence, they were also the most expensive. As an example, several clones of Paph. Millers Daughters, which I bred in England sold for tens of thousands of dollars. Even today they are still very hard to find. Over many years, I have built up a collection of several different white hybrids and made new crosses. These are now available for sale as flowering size divisions. Paph. F. C. Puddle FCC/RHS $55 This has been the most used parent in the breeding of white slippers. One or two flowers per stem during autumn and winter. Nicky’s Slippers www.nickysslippers.com.au 3 Paph. Dimity “Chilton” AM/RHS $150 Exhibiting some very faint dusting on the dorsal -‐ one of the best whites I have. Paph. Freckles “Corkey” AM/AOS $120 This comparatively large white flower has more peppering over all segments. Advanced size Mericlones $35 Paph. Susan Tucker “Isobell” AM/AOS $95 35 $55 The best shaped clone of this hybrid. Paph. White Hart An almost pure white flower but on a short stem. The nine clones above were all bred from F.C. Puddle as one of the parents. Paph. Candy Pink A very robustly growing pink out of of Paph. Blagrose and a cute white species Paph. niveum. Nicky’s Slippers www.nickysslippers.com.au 5 PAPHIOPEDILUM SEEDLINGS Normal size = 120mm -‐ 200mm leaf span. Advanced size = 200mm plus leaf span ALBINO MAUDIAE TYPES (seedlings) These are the worlds first release of albino (white and green striped) ‘Maudiae’ type hybrid slipper orchids with a tetraploid parent (double the normal number of chromosomes to 4n.) The result is large, long stemmed flowers with heavier substance, much faster and vigorously growing plants. Normal Advanced Paph. Gothic Garden “Sharon” x Gavotte “Fantasy” 4n $20 $28 “Sharon” has a very nice round shape and combined with the solid substance of “Fantasy” will prove to be a very good combination. Paph. Holdeni AM x Gavotte “Fantasy” 4n $20 $28 This combination with the perfect dorsal of Holdeni is expected to be among the best albino Maudiaes. Paph. Gothic Garden “Tetrasong”4n x Holdeni f2 “Leonor” $20 $28 “Leonor “ is a second generation Holdeni of award quality. “Tetrasong” will impart great strength to produce new show winners. Paph. Onix alba x Somers Isle “Most Green” 4n $18 $25 The Onix is a large flower and Somers Isle a deep green which it inherits from its grand parent Paph sukhakulii. New deeper green flowers which are easy to grow are expected. Paph. Holdeni AM x Somers Isle “Most Green” 4n $18 $25 The introduction of the alba Paph. Sukhakulii into multi generation “albinos” through Summers Isle, is a new direction in this type of breeding. Paph. Makuli “Green Mist” AM/AOS x Gavotte 4n $18 $25 The Makuli will pass on mostly horizontal petals onto the heavy substance tetraploid Gavotte. Paph. Gavotte “Mow Bow” 4n x Holdeni f2 “Green Giant” $18 $25 Large flowers of solid substance should be the result of this crossing. COLORATUM MAUDIAE TYPES (seedlings) (seedlings) Paph. Maudiae “Claudia” 4n x Maudiae “Los Osos” AM/AOS Advanced Normal $20 $28 This is a remake of a cross I made earlier, which has already won several shows and awards around Australia and overseas. Mostly perfect shapes on tall stems, ideal for long lasting cut flowers. All 4n crosses tolerate lower temperatures than the conventional diploid breeds. Paph. Sukhakulii “Jungle Queen” x Maudiae 4n “Bashi” $18 $25 Surprisingly large flowers have been produced by this unusual combination. A good demonstration to show how much power a 4n parent can impart on a 2n partner. Nicky’s Slippers www.nickysslippers.com.au 6 CHINESE OR PARVISEPALUM TYPE HYBRID (seedings) Normal Advanced As with the “Maudiae breeding, the tetraploid Golddollar parents will give these crossings great extra vigor and substance (thickness of the flower segments). Paph. Fumis Delight “Perfect” x Golddollar “Tetragold” $20 $30 These are really easy to grow with up to three flowers per stem. The most vigorous “Parvi” cross I have seen, almost like the old Paph. Insigne. Paph. malipoense “Green Surprise” x Paph. Golddollar “Tetrani” 4n $20 $30 Again, quite hardy, only frost protection is needed. Colour will vary, but mostly golden-‐yellow with darker markings. Paph. delenatii f2 x Golddollar “Tetragold” 4n $18 $28 Flowers open a pure lemon-‐yellow, maturing into a pure creamy-‐white. Up to three flowers per stem, not temperature sensitive. Paph. Hatsue Otzuka (rothschildianum x Golddollar “Tetrani”) $35 $55 Another ‘World First’ using a tetraploid parent. Lynleigh Koopowitz (malipoense x delenatii) $18 White and pink flowers on tall stems. The large dark staminode (disk) in the center of the flower is a unique attraction. Paph. St. Swithin x micranthum $28 Should resemble Paph. Gloria Naugle. Several vivid pink flowers with darker vanings per stem. Paph. Golddollar “Tetraria” x Verde Oro “Cowburg” $22 $35 This is the third generation advanced from Paph. armeniacum producing large pure yellow flowers, usually two per stem. Strong grower. Paph. Imperial Jade x Golddollar “Pseudotet” 4n $20 $28 With the influence of Paph. stonei as a grandparent I expect up to four flowers with longish petals on tall stems. Nicky’s Slippers www.nickysslippers.com.au 13 HOW TO GROW “SLIPPER” ORCHIDS (Paphiopedilums) LIGHT -‐ With the aid of minerals taken up by the roots, light absorbed from the sun, and carbon dioxide from the air, green leaves produce energy to grow and flower. This process is called photosynthesis, “Paphs” require a much lower light intensity than cattleyas, dendrobiums or cymbidiums for this to occur at an optimum level. An easy light test is to move your hand about 50cm above the foliage on a sunny day. If a noticeable shadow is cast on the leaves, apply more shade. Most people who say they don’t have ‘much luck with slippers’ keep them either too bright or grow them in pots too large. When growing outdoors, shade cloth with a density of 90 % is recommended or better still, a double layer of 70% so that one layer can be removed in late Autumn and added again at the end of Winter. For indoor growing, bright light but no sun (weather direct or filtered) is best. Paph leaves should always be a lush green. POTTING -‐ It is worth remembering that most Paphs die from over-‐potting. The smallest pot possible should be used to comfortably fit the roots. Overly long roots are best ‘spiralled’ into the pot by turning the pot until the roots are wound in. Frequent potting is beneficial but no more than twice a year, however healthy and mature plants can confidently be left in the same pot for two years. Suitable materials for potting include bark, coconut chips, perlite, polystyrene, shell grit, and gravel. Particle size should not exceed 15 mm of any ingredient. I like the bark component to be at least 50% of the volume with some coconut chips for extra water holding. It is important for the mix to be moist but never wet when potting. TEMPERATURE -‐ The optimum temperature for most Paphs is around 26°C during the day and relative humidity of around 50% -‐ 60%. Paphs are however, quite tolerant to extremes. Even 40°C and just short of freezing for short periods will do no harm, but prolonged extremes will slow down growth and eventually kill. Draughts or strong winds, especially on hot days will desecrate the leaves. Air movement or fans are not required. WATERING -‐ If you only have a few plants, stand the pots in the sink or a container overnight with the water level about half way up the pots, once a week. This will give them an even soaking. Rain water is preferable, fertilizer can be added. Pot plants should always be given a good soaking when dry, rather than small amounts often. FERTILIZER -‐ Most fertilizer brands including fish and seaweed products for indoor plants are suitable if used at a quarter to half recommended strength about once every third watering and less frequently during Winter and extremely hot weather. DELIVERY & PACKING -‐ Packing and regular postage is $18.00 anywhere in Australia. All plants and seedlings are sent bare root. They are well packed and suffer practically no set-‐back. There is no sense in paying freight for heavy pots and compost. Most plants get dislodged or loosened in the pots in transport and it is far better to grow them in your own mix.
