1. Roystonea regia (Kunth) O. F. Cook 大王椰子(王棕) (Photo 43) Science, II, 12: 479. 1900; FGD 2: 463, fig. 326. 1991; FRPS 13(1): 129. 1991. Large tree, to 30 m tall, dioecious. Stems solitary, to 50 cm in diam., grey-white, smooth, rings of leaf scars conspicuous when young. Leaves pinnate, about 15 in number, to 5 m long, recurved; pinnae to 250 per side, arranged on different planes, elongate lanceolate, 2-lobed at apices, to 90 × 4 cm; sheaths closed and forming a green, leathery crownshaft. Inflorescences to 1.5 m, branched 3–4 orders. Flowers small, white, male flowers 6–7 mm, stamens 6; female flowers 3–3.5 mm. Fruits subglobose, about 1.3 × 1 cm, dark-red. Seed 1, endosperm homogeneous. Locality: Cultivated. Distribution: SE USA, C Mexico, Caribbean, Mesoamerica, cultivated elsewhere. Ecology: Flowering: Mar.–Apr.; fruiting: Oct. Uses: Ornamental.
