PLANT CARE INFORMATION
Arrowweed or Cochinilla
Pluchea sericea
DESCRIPTION: Arrowweed is an upright shrub often growing 7-9 feet tall with several long,
straight, stiff stems per plant. This evergreen shrub with small blue-green leaves spreads slowly
by rhizomes. The stems branch towards the tips, providing a straight, stiff shaft suitable for
making arrows and spears. Pink to purple composite flowers bloom in the spring and early
summer. Butterflies are attracted the flowers for their nectar. Arrowweed is a common
component of streamside communities and often forms dense thickets along streams and in
washes and canyons in the Lower Sonoran and Mojave Desert Scrub habitats. It tolerates dryer
landscape usage well.
RECOMMENDED USE: Can be used as a screen, barrier or background, and to attract
wildlife.
CULTURE:
Hardiness: Down to at least 20F.
Sun tolerance: Full sun to part shade.
Watering and feeding: Low to moderate water use. No need to fertilize.
Soil requirements: Most soils will do.
Pruning: As needed to shape and control at any time.
