1810 N. Dupont St. Wilmington, DE 19806 (302) 658 6262 TheDCH.org White Fringetree Chionanthus virginicus Description: Large shrub or small tree, 15 - 20’ tall with equal spread. One of our more handsome native flowering plants. It is slow-growing and may take 2-3 years before blooming. The white, slightly fragrant flowers hang in a panicles just as the leaves are emerging in mid to late May giving the appearance of a fluffy cloud. Leaves: 3 to 8” long and 1/3 as wide medium to dark green in summer. Fall color is yellow. Fruit: Dark blue fleshy egg-shaped drupe 1/2” to 2/3” long in August & September are mostly hidden by the leaves and enjoyed by birds. Habitat: Prefers moist, organically rich acid soils, but is extremely adaptable. Full sun to part shade. Tolerant of air pollution Fun Facts: Author & Horticulturalist Michael Dirr would like to make a case for this to be the national shrub or small tree because of it’s “refinement, dignity and class when in flower.”
