THESE NATIVE & HEIRLOOM PLANTS
ARE IDEAL FOR LOCAL GARDENS
Perennials and Ferns:
Amsonia hubrichti was the Perennial Plant Society’s 2011 “Plant of the Year.” It shows light blue flowers in spring
followed by a rich foliage in the summer that turns to gold in the fall. Likes moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate dry
conditions after it becomes established. Full to partial sun.
Aquilegia Canadensis shows yellow flowers in May and grows to 2 feet, likes the sun but can tolerate part shade. Flowers
are 1-2 inches long and have yellow petals with a red spur . They appear in late spring.
Aster oblingifolius reached 1 – 2 feet with daisy-like blooms of violet florets around a yellow center, blooming in late
summer to early fall. These asters like full sun and dry soil.
Athyrium felix femina, the Common Lady-fern, is full and feathery with light green fronds. It prefers damp woodlands and
grows in clumps, reaching 2 – 3 feet.
Chrysogonum virginianum is a native ground cover known for both it's foliage and flowers with toothed, light green,
triangular leaves and dark yellow, slightly notched, star shaped flowers that appear in spring. It likes moist soil and grows
to 4 – 6 inches in full or partial shade.
Coreopsis “Zagreb” has bright yellow flowers that sit atop tall, erect, lacey-looking, green foliage. The flowers are
abundant and bloom continuously throughout the entire summer. Reaches 18 inches. Great in rock gardens and gardens
with poor soil. Makes a good cut flower. Likes partial to full sun.
Echinacea “Pow Wow Wild Berry” boasts large, deep rose-colored, daisy-like flowers and reaches 2 feet in a full-sun
garden with well-drained soil. It flowers all summer and is best known for its stunning floral color.
Eupatorium dubium, Joe Pye Weed , has big clusters of mauve-pink flowers that are very attractive to butterflies. It can
reach 4 feet, and thrives in partial to full sun, in moist soil. The fluffy seed heads are nesting material for birds.
Gaillardia grandiflora, blanketflower, reaches 2-3 feet and tolerates dry, even sandy soil. With masses of red blooms, it
flowers from early summer through fall in full sun. The 1 ½” blooms are great for cut flower arrangements.
Liatris microcephala is a compact native with fine-textured, deep green, grassy leaves, Dwarf Blazingstar sends up
numerous 18” – 24” spikes with tassel-like rosy purple flowers in August and September. Tolerant of clay and drought, very
low maintenance. Does well in partial to full sun. Loved by butterflies.
Lobelia cardinalis with vibrant, cardinal-red lobed flowers on slender spikes blooms from July until fall. Attracts
hummingbirds and butterflies. Excellent for moist soils. Can grow to 4’ in partial to full sun.
Mertensia Virginica is great for wooded areas, with blue flowers appearing in April. It grows to 24". Blue bells like the
shaded forest and damp soil. Its leaves are round, gray-green in hue.
Osmunda cinnamomea or cinnamon fern likes partial shade to partial sun and sandy, moist soil. The showy leaves grow
almost perfectly upright, bunched in a shuttlecock-like shape.
Passiflora incarnate is a hardy, woody vine with very complex flowers. Flowers have 5 purple-blue petals in a corona of
purple with thread-like white appendages. The vines, which can spread 12’ in a single season, like full to partial sun. They
are great grown on fences or trellises.
Phlox divaricata grows to 15” in partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Loose clusters violet-blue, sweetly fragrant
flowers appear on compact plants in spring, providing nectar for butterflies early in the season. Plants will spread and can
form large colonies over time. Foliage is burgundy in winter. Will tolerate everything from partial shade to full sun.
Phlox panicula is a butterfly magnet with wide clusters of fragrant, clear pink flowers accented by maroon eyes on sturdy,
erect stems. It grows 2 -3 feet in well-drained soil, but will tolerate drought when mature. Phlox does best in partial to full
sun.
Polystichum acrostichoides, or Christmas fern, is a woodland fern that stays green all winter. Its dark green, pointed
fronds reach 2-3 feet. It needs moist soil and does well in full to partial shade.
Rudbeckia speciosa is a black-eyed Susan with golden petals around a dark brown cone. It likes full sun and well-drained
soil and reaches only 15”. A long blooming period and good fall color.
Sedum ternatum, or stonecrop,is A low-growing, succulent native groundcover for shade, it carpets the woodland floor
with round leaves arranged in threes. In spring it is covered in white star-shaped flowers. It reaches only 6” and likes moist
soil but will tolerate anything from full sun to full shade.
Solidago Dansolitelm “Little Lemon” is the lightest yellow-flowering goldenrod available and produces a bright display of
lemon-yellow flower spikes. It is compact, reaching only 8-10 inches in height when blooming. Flowering occurs for several
weeks during August and September. Prefers full sun and is good for containers.
Stokesia “Purple Parasols” has flowers that are like a double Shasta Daisy, but light blue deepening to deep violet
purple. Plants form a low mound of leathery green leaves. Tolerant of hot, humid summer regions and will grow in sandy
soil. The plants reach 20”. Does best in full sun.
Verbena “Homestead Purple” grows to 3-feet wide and a foot tall and is topped with a mass of bright purple blooms that
start in the spring and continue until frost. Its leaves are deep green, scalloped, coarse-textured and up to 4 inches long.
The plant’s stem trails across the ground. Likes full sun and well-drained soil.
Heirloom Tomatoes:
Brandywine bears large reddish-pink tomatoes (can be 1 ½ pounds each) with a sweet, rich tomato flavor.
Green Zebra is green with yellow stripes, 2” in diameter and has a “tomatoey” flavor with a spicy zing.
Cherokee purple is a beefsteak style tomato with a deep purple-red hue. They’re very juicy, like the Brandywine in flavor.
Mortgage lifter is huge – 2 ½ pounds – with a mild flavor and few seeds, perfect for sandwiches.
Striped German is yellow-red in color, looks great sliced, very fruity in flavor and grows in crazy shapes.
San Marzano, a plum variety, grows to 3” pointed shapes and is maybe the best tomato there is for sauce.
