HEDGING PLANTS - Native
PROFILE SHEET
Here is a selection of native plants suitable for hedging or screening.
Coastal Rosemary - Westringia fruticosa Wynyabbie Gem
A super hedging plant that can be hard pruned and shaped. Wynyabbie Gem is one of the more
popular forms, but there are many other varieties to consider including Jervis Gem, Cadabra and
Aussie Box.
Hardy and tolerant of a variety of soils. A good one for coastal gardens.
Height: 1.5m Width: 1.5m
Form: Rounded shrub Foliage: Dark green leaves on upright attractive dark red stems
Purple Leafed Dodonaea - Dodonaea viscosa Purpurea
The Purple Leafed Dodonaea makes an eye catching wall of burgundy when planted as a screen or
hedge. It’s great for coastal sites, and a good plant for reducing soil erosion.
Height: 3m Width: 1.5m
Form: Conical habit Foliage: Slender purple leaves
Flowers: Insignificant flowers, followed by purple seeds
Bottlebrush - Callistemon citrinus x viminalis King's Park Special
This reliable shrub has been used widely by councils in street tree and highway plantings due to its
adaptability to a wide variety of soils (including wet sites). It also makes a great sound barrier, has
good screening properties and it attracts native birds.
Height: 5m Width: 4m
Form: Rounded dense shrub/small tree with pendulous branches Foliage: Smooth slender dark green
leaves with a spiky tip
Flowers: Crimson coloured bottle brushes in summer and will appear sporadically in autumn also
Lily Pilly - Acmena smithii Minor
Great for topiary and formal hedging, this clips really well to form a neat, dense hedge. Frost hardy
and fairly drought tolerant once established, but best with a bit of extra water on hot days.
Height: 3m Width: 1.5m
Form: Dense upright shrub Foliage: Small glossy green leaves, new growth copper coloured.
Flowers: Fluffy cream coloured flowers that appear from spring through to summer, followed by
purple fleshy berries. To avoid berries developing, trim off flower buds.
Coastal Correa - Correa alba
A fantastic plant used widely in public spaces due to its ease of manageability and hardiness. It
grows well in coastal sites, and prefers a well drained soil. Shear after flowering to keep dense.
Can be clipped into shapes and will tolerate part shade.
Height: 1.5m Width: 1m
Form: Dense shrub Foliage: Small rounded pale green/grey leaves
Flowers: Small white star-shaped flowers in late winter and spring
Purple Tea Tree - Leptospermum obovatum Starry Night
With its burgundy foliage and soft weeping habit this shrub/tree makes a welcome addition to
gardens. Bird and butterfly attracting, it will grow in coastal conditions and is drought hardy
once well established.
Height: 2.5m Width: 2m
Form: Rounded weeping shrub Foliage: Small burgundy leaves
Flowers: Pretty white flowers appear in masses in spring and summer
