1. Name of genetic disorder and History.
2. What body system(s) are affected and what are some symptoms that people with
the disorder experience? What is the prognosis?
3. What gene(s) and chromosome(s) are affected?
4a. How do people get it?
4b. What does the mutation cause?
5. Is the disease inherited or does it happen randomly? If it is inherited, is the gene
dominant or recessive? Autosomal or sex-linked?
6. Does it matter if you are a boy or a girl? Is any ethnic group/race affected more than
others? Is the disease age-related?
7. What type of tests are done to diagnose the disorder? Is genetic counseling
available?
8. How can the disorder be treated? Most discoveries are incurable, so what kind of
therapies or treatments can patients have in order to deal with their disorders?
9. Include other interesting facts about the disorder.
10. Given what you now know about this genetic disorder. What medical advice would
you give to a couple in the following scenarios?
a. The woman is 37 years old and wants to have a child with her partner. What is
the risk of the child having the disorder you studied?
b. The family already has one child with the disorder. Should the family have
another child naturally? Why or why not?
c. A couple in their late 20s has started a family, and their genetic screening shows
that the woman is pregnant with a child who has the disorder. What should the
family do? Why?
