First Year Tourism Stream THE STRUCTURE OF THE TOURISM PROGRAMME This programme is designed to provide students with an education about structural, management, marketing and policy matters related to the modern tourism phenomena. The programme is aimed at producing informed, knowledgeable graduates with a critical awareness of tourism as one of the most powerful forces in the globalised late twentieth century. Special emphasis is placed on the critical understanding of inter-cultural, linguistic, environmental and development issues in the South African tourism industry. Students should be in position to demonstrate a theoretically-based and practically sound level of competence for employment as researchers, educators, policy- makers, tourism officers, analysts, tourism planners and programmers, travel agents, tourism managers, and other tourism entrepreneurs YEAR ONE : Geography 111 and 121 modules are compulsory: Students intending to take a BA in Tourism Studies must successfully complete the Geography 111 and Geography 121 courses. Completion of the Humanities Foundation course is also recommended. NOTE: All practical examination papers are written in the Department.Students unable to acquire stereoscopic vision for photo interpretation, should note that they will be at a considerable disadvantage in the practical work, as aerial photographs and satellite imagery are important tools for geographical enquiry and environmental management. Field excursions are an integral part of the senior programmes and as such are compulsory. UNDERGRADUATE COURSES YEAR 1 (Compulsory) Module GES 111 : Introduction to Human Geography Module GES 121 : Introduction to Physical Geography YEAR 1 MODULE DESCRIPTION GES 111:Introduction to Human Geography -The focus on Human Geography covers aspects such as urban development, geography of countries, population and migration, settlements, resources, transport and tourism patterns. Also economic, social and political processes that create these environments. The focus on practical skills includes simple graphical and statistical skills for representing and analyzing patterns and processes. GES 121:Introduction to Physical Geography - The focus on Physical Geography includes various physical landscapes, rock types, atmospheric structure, characteristics and processes, energy exchange, moisture, air movement, earth crust processes as well as weathering and erosion. The focus on practical skills includes ways of presenting spatial information through elementary (mental) mapping procedures, map-reading tasks as well as drawing techniques.
