Soil Testing
Don’t guess Soil Test. Soil testing is a good idea when you are planting in
a new area, or if plants are not doing well. Soil testing is offered through
the Washtenaw County Extension/MSU Extension Office.
A soil test will determine the pH of soil, the current fertility of the soil, and
give recommendations for fertilizer applications. Note: this is not a test for
contamination of soils, diseases, or insects in the soil.

Cost: Mailers for landscapes, vegetable & flower gardens are available at
your local MSU Extension office for $25.00.
Sampling: for garden soils, sample 6 inches to 8 inches deep.
For lawns, lift the sod and sample 3 inches deep.
Take 15 or 20 sub samples in the area you are testing and mix them
thoroughly in a clean plastic pail. Submit 1 ½ to 2 cups of the mix, after it is
air-dried.
Do not include roots, thatch, plant materials, rocks or gravel in the sample.
Your soil will be tested for pH, essential nutrients for the plants you intend
to grow, and organic matter.
