Tracking Maths Objectives by Year – Understanding Shape – Year 6 to 9 Year 6 Progression into Year 7 Describe, identify and visualise parallel and perpendicular edges or faces; use these properties to classify 2-D shapes and 3-D solids Use correctly the vocabulary, notation and labelling conventions for lines, angles and shapes Make and draw shapes with increasing accuracy and apply knowledge of their properties Extend knowledge of properties of triangles and quadrilaterals and use these to visualise and solve problems, explaining reasoning with diagrams Construct a triangle given two sides and the included angle Year 7 Year 8 Exceptional Performance Identify parallel and perpendicular lines; know the sum of angles at a point, on a straight line and in a triangle Understand and apply Pythagoras' theorem Use straight edge and compasses to do standard constructions Deduce and use formulae for the area of a triangle and parallelogram, and the volume of a cuboid; calculate volumes and surface areas of cuboids Visualise and draw on grids of different types where a shape will be after reflection, after translations, or after rotation through 90° or 180° about its centre or one of its vertices Year 9 Know from experience of constructing them that triangles given SSS, SAS, ASA or RHS are unique, but that triangles given SSA or AAA are not; apply these conditions to establish the congruence of triangles Know and use the formulae for the circumference and area of a circle Know that translations, rotations and reflections preserve length and angle and map objects on to congruent images Tracking Maths Objectives by Year – Understanding Shape – Year 6 to 9 Use coordinates in the first quadrant to draw, locate and complete shapes that meet given properties Use all four quadrants to find coordinates of points determined by geometric information Estimate angles, and use a protractor to measure and draw them, on their own and in shapes; calculate angles in a triangle or around a point Know the sum of angles on a straight line, in a triangle and at a point, and recognise vertically opposite angles Identify alternate and corresponding angles; understand a proof that the sum of the angles of a triangle is 180° and of a quadrilateral is 360° Identify all the symmetries of 2-D shapes; transform images using ICT Enlarge 2-D shapes, given a centre of enlargement and a positive whole-number scale factor Solve geometrical problems using properties of angles, of parallel and intersecting lines, and of triangles and other polygons Know that if two 2-D shapes are similar, corresponding angles are equal and corresponding sides are in the same ratio
