Have you ever wondered why Athens was called the birth place of democracy?
Well not only did it begin there; there was free society in Athens. However now
Athenians want to put a man named Socrates to death because of his opinions. Socrates
was a man who taught kids for free in Athens and talked about Athens society. Socrates
shouldn’t be put to death because if he was killed of something he said then Athens won’t
have a true democracy and a democracy has freedom of speech. Second reason is because
the punishment is too harsh. This is why Socrates shouldn’t be put to death.
Some people believe that Socrates is a bad person and should be put to death.
They think this should happen because he associated with Athens enemies. For instance,
people believed that he mentored one of the thirty tyrants that took over Athens. He also
didn’t worshiped Athenian gods. Furthermore, people say that he taught his students to
ask bad questions. Lastly, people say that he uses strong language to trick people. This is
why they think Socrates should be put to death.
However, he shouldn’t be put to death because Socrates help fight the war against Sparta
and it wouldn’t be fair to Socrates to be put to death because how other people thinks of
him. Indeed Socrates taught his students for free but let’s not forget that there’s no such
thing as bad questions. Also, if Socrates was forced to believe in Athenian gods then
Athens won’t be a democracy because in democracy you have the right to believe in any
god. Furthermore it wasn’t Socrates’s fault that one of his students became one of the
thirty tyrants. Lastly, don’t we Athenians want strong language to persuade?
The first reason why Socrates shouldn’t be put to death is because he was just a
silly man who spoke nonsense about Athens. He shouldn’t be put to death because if he
was put to death then it wouldn’t be a true democracy let’s not forget that we Athenians
have always dreamt of a fair and peaceful society. In addition, he didn’t say anything bad
about the city. He is also an Athenian citizen why execute more of your people right after
the war and when you are trying to recover from it. Wouldn’t it be easier for intruders to
attack if you execute one of your best thinkers? Now imagine yourself as Socrates how
would you feel if you’re on trial for the little things you said. That is why Socrates
shouldn’t be put to death.
Besides, Socrates shouldn’t be put to death is because the penalty is way too harsh.
Why someone should be executed just because he said something bad. Imagine you
speaking in front of your city and just because the citizens don’t like you or what you
said you might as well end up like Socrates. This is not fair to Socrates because just for
the little thing he said he has to be put on trial. That’s why Socrates shouldn’t be put to
death.
In conclusion, Socrates should not be killed because if Athens had a true
democracy he should be allowed to express himself. Also, the punishment is way too
harsh just for saying a few things. As our great leader Pericles once said “For we do not
think there is an incompatibility between words and deeds, the worst thing is to rush into
action before the consequence is properly debated. Now ask yourselves, should Socrates
be put to death. What I suggest you do is that start a vote of whether not Socrates should
be executed. In fact, this is what our great leader Pericles would do. However, remember
that if you’re wrong you’ll be holding a lot of guilt on yourself.
