Hands-On
UCL INSTITUTE OF
CARDIOVASCULAR
SCIENCE
CARDIAC
MORPHOLOGY
This course is suitable for all those
The aim of the course is to allow for
wishing to improve their knowledge of
structured learning, about important groups
cardiac anatomy, in particular congenital
of congenital heart disease, in a self-
heart malformations, from fetal life to
directed and object-based manner through
adulthood. Participants find that the
didactic lectures, discussion and hands-on
course provides a significant step in
examination of heart specimens.
their professional learning, regardless of
specialty or level. Knowledge will be built
up from day 1 (normal anatomy and septal
defects) to the more complex topics
on days 2 and 3. It is suitable for both
healthcare professionals and for scientists
investigating the causes of disease.
By the end of the course, participants should
be comfortable with the anatomy of major
groups of congenital heart disease and be
able to analyse hearts in a logical fashion.
Topics (full programme overleaf)
• The approach to analysis
• Detailed normal anatomy
• Septal defects (ASD, VSD, AVSD)
• Outflow tract abnormalities:
tetralogy of Fallot, double outlet ventricle,
transposition, arch anomalies
• Valvar abnormalities
• Complex lesions – Isomerism, functionally
univentricular hearts
