PHOTOSYNTHESIS!
From the Greek language.
Means “ using light to put
something together.”
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Current definition: Process
occurring in the chloroplast that
converts light energy, water and
carbon dioxide into glucose
(energy-rich carb) and oxygen.
WHERE IN THE PLANT CELL DOES
PHOTOSYNTHESIS TAKE PLACE?
Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of leaves, and requires
light-absorbing pigments called Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll b.
Typically, other
plant parts do not
photosynthesize.
WORD EQUATION FOR
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Light
Carbon dioxide + water  Oxygen + Glucose
Glucose is a sugar that stores energy in the plant.
CHEMICAL EQUATION FOR
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Light
6CO2 + 6H20 
6O2 + C6H12O6
glucose
Photosynthesis
 Plants are green due to the green chloroplasts inside
them which contain chlorophyll (pigment).
 Plant –like photosynthesizers
 Some fungi
 All Blue-green bacteria
 Non-animals that do not photosynthesize :
 Fungi (mushrooms)
 Strep bacteria (most do not anyway)
 Chemosynthetic plants
What it actually looks like…
 Taken with a TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope)
See page ____ for
diagram.
Two overall steps…
Light Reactions
Dark Reactions
 Chlorophyll in chloroplasts
 Also called the “Calvin
receive light energy, and
electrons ‘jump’ right out
of the molecule.
 These electrons are passed
along an electron transport
chain to power ATP
synthase.
 One by-product is O2
cycle” after Melvin Calvin
 Uses the ATP just
produced and CO2 to make
C6H12O6 (glucose)
The Light Reactions
 Deep inside the chloroplast, on the thylakoid membrane
Makes
ATP!
O2 is a
byproduct
The Dark Reactions
 A little less deep in the chloroplast
Uses ATP
and CO2
to make
C6H12O6
(glucose)
Cellular Respiration
Definition: The process of breaking down glucose to
useable energy (ATP).
ALL cells in organisms undergo cellular respiration!!!
Chemical equation for this process
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ----> 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36 ATP
Glucose + Oxygen yields carbon dioxide + water + ATP (energy)
