Facultative anaerobe
Non-motile, non-lactose fermenting
Causes inflammatory disorder of the
intestine (dysentery). – can lead to
watery and bloody diarrhea, can also
cause abdominal pain
• Dysentery results in the destruction of
the epithelial cells of the intestinal
mucosa.
• Contains the endotoxin Shiga toxin
• Major cause of diarrheal disease in
developing nations
