CQ: Describe the Battle of Fort Sumter? What was President Lincoln’s view on Secession? As the Civil War began, what was Lincoln’s goal for the Union? The First Battle of the Civil War Fort Sumter – was the first battle of the Civil War. It was not a significant battle, just in that at was the first battle. Fort Sumter- a military fort at the mouth of Charleston, South Carolina When South Carolina (the first state) secedes, the leaders of SC do not consider themselves or SC to be a part of the US any longer. The military fort, Fort Sumter, on their soil, is now under their control…so they think…but those in the Fort are members of the UNION President Lincoln does not recognize the fact that SC has seceded from the Union. Pres. Lincoln- felt that South Carolina was just being led by a bunch of radicals… Build-up to War…. April 10, 1861- Beauregard- has been told by the Confederate Leaders to remove the Union (those in Fort Sumter)from SC. The men in Fort Sumter belong to the Union o Beauregard asks Major Anderson (of Fort Sumter) to surrender o Fort Sumter is run by Major Robert Anderson o Anderson (Union) refuses to surrender Fort Sumter o Beauregard (Confederacy) orders a blockade of Charleston Harbor, this blockade causes Fort Sumter to run out of supplies. o Anderson sends word back to the Union to let them know that they are running out of supplies, (food) o Lincoln orders supplies to be sent to Fort Sumter by Union ships. o Lincoln knows that the Union ships will be stopped by the Confederate ships..this will be an act of War! April 12-13, 1861 – Confederate Ships blockade Union ships and fire upon Fort Sumter. This is the beginning of the Civil War. o No one was killed in this battle o April 13, 1861, Anderson surrenders Fort Sumter to the Confederacy, o The US flag was removed and the Confederate flag was raised. Lincoln is aware that this battle will lead to war, he just didn’t realize how long the war would last! Lincoln’s goal… TO PRESERVE THE UNION… His goal never waivers or changes whether at the beginning, middle or end of the Civil War. Assignment #1 Students will read this information and answer the CQ’s Do this for Monday 4/5… Assignment #2 Create a Front Page article using pages that discusses the beginning of the Civil War as if it just happened. -Use a picture -Facts and Details---Similar to
