produce (Ex.
Giving off light)
Reflect
Reflect means to
give back or
bounce (ex.
reflecting light)

What emits and reflects light in
the following places?
Our classroom
Our atmosphere
Our Solar System
Spend some time chatting with your
table group and come up with as
many things as you can in each area
What objects in our
classroom emit light?
What objects in the room
reflect light?
What objects in our
atmosphere or close to
earth orbit emit light?

Stars and Sun
Most of the objects we see in the night sky
are stars which are light emitting objects
and therefore are sources of energy
The sun is obviously the largest object in
the sky that emits light.
The moon and planets
There are a relatively small number of
objects in the night sky that are seen by
reflected light; the most visible of which is
the Moon
The moon, planets and their satellites are
seen because they reflect light from our
Sun
Why does the moon shine?
