Julius Caesar, Hero or Tyrant
Julius Caesar was a roman king who had a lot of power, many people debate whether he used his power as a hero
or tyrant. Caesar had all of the power from 102-44 BCE. All of the people of Rome suffered or liked what Caesar did with
his power. Was Caesar a hero or tyrant? Many people ask this question because it is very important to figure out if Rome
was lead by a hero; someone who I believe would listen to everyone’s opinion and was granted power by earning or
deserving it. Or lead by a tyrant; a person I believe does not use their power wisely and makes poor decisions. My
opinion about Caesar and his power using is that, although Caesar was granted much power, I believe that he used it in
the wrong ways at times.
The reason that I think that Caesar used his power wrongly is because in the packet, Structured Debate-Was
Julius Caesar a Hero or Tyrant? There are many sections of evidence that he had power but used it wrongly. “Leaders in
the Senate began to worry. They were afraid that Julius Caesar wanted to take over the government and rule Rome as a
King”. This piece of evidence shows the government of Rome granted much power to Caesar, then they found that Caesar
wanted to take over the government. The only way that Caesar could do this is because of all of his power. Also as I read
this packet I find that most of the people of Rome liked Caesar, but then he turned against the public and started doing
tyrannical things.
To prove my point showing that many people liked Caesar, when he had an idea people would gather around him.
“He suggested new laws, reorganized the army also he improved the way the provinces were governed”. Also, “When, Julius
Caesar said he had something to say, the people flocked to the Forum to hear his ideas. His ideas had been good ones.” At
this point of Caesars life I think that he was a hero because many people liked him, also he tried to improved the
community of Rome by making new laws and other small things along these lines.
When you think of a hero, Batman or Spiderman usually come to mind. As heroes how do you think these
characters will die? Most likely doing some heroic action that protects an aconite person. Well for those of you who
think that Caesar is a complete hero what if I told you that Julius was stabbed 23 times in the chest? “On the 15 th of
March, 44 BCE, in a meeting hall adjacent to Pompey’s theater, the Roman Senate awaited the arrival of the Republic’s
supreme commander, Julius Caesar. This particular session did not promise to be an eventful one for most of the
senators. But others among them were fully alive to what was in the offing. They stood about trying to maintain a calm
and casual pose—with daggers concealed beneath their togas.” Next as Caesar enters the room all of the men jump onto
Julius and violently stab Caesar in the chest. By doing this the senators said they believe that they saved the Roman
Republic by doing this. I believe that any kind of hero doesn’t die from being murdered by their own senate.
For much of Caesars life I believe that he used his power for good not evil. But then something happened and he
decided to use it badly and in the wrong sense. “Julius Caesar ignored the law. In 49 BCE, he entered Rome with the
Roman Legion, and took over the government.” I see why now the the senators said that by killing Caesar they saved the
republic. Because Caesar took over the government with all of his power and there was nothing that was going to stop him
and his ideas other then killing him.
All n all Julius Caesar was a very important and symbolic person for the city of Rome. You could debate whether or not
he was a hero or tyrant. But my opinion is the he was granted much power, but used it no to the best of his ability
sometimes. Also I think he was a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Or in other words a tyrannical king.
