Iron Ore Company of Canada Health, Safety & Environment IOC-S-E-FRM Contractor HV Electrical Area Assessment Contractor HV Electrical Area Competency Area Assessment Electrical Personnel: Date of Birth: YY/MM/DD Contractor Supervisor (or designate): Date: Contractor Company: The Area Competency Checklist is a required component of the Qualified Contractor Electrical Personnel Certification Checklist. The employee’s Supervisor (or designate) shall complete an Area Competency Checklist with each employee every two years. The purpose is to ensure employee’s have the basic knowledge to work safely in a prescribed area or specific job task. Employees performing electrical work must be trained, not only in general electrical principles, but also in safe work practices and testing procedures specific to worksite equipment, processes and tasks which they are required to perform. Understanding and application of these skills must be demonstrated, reviewed and documented every two years. For purposes of this requirement, the term demonstrated may include on the job observation, discussion and/ or testing. 1. Use of Grounding and Bonding Systems. - Knowledge of the grounding and bonding work practice, procedure and checklist. - Use an Earth Megger to do ground resistance testing. - Use of personnel grounds vs system grounds. 6. Battery Systems for control and associated hazards. - Switching - UPS basic functions. - Storage/care/hazards. 7. Basic understanding of MV/HV ac/dc Drives 2. Isolating HV systems. - Purpose and use of switching orders. - Difference between switching orders and isolation checklists. - How to test for absence of voltage. 8. Demonstrate Safe Use of Area Specific Electrical Test Equipment. - Hot Sticks. - HV gloves. - Testing for absence of voltage. 3. Substation access procedures. 9. Perform successful splice or termination of 8kV Cable 4. Knowledge of IOC site specific high voltage Starters/Breakers - Understand testing/racking units. - Importance of removing Control Power to breaker when interacting with system. - Arc flash zone when remotely opening/closing starters/breakers. 10. Perform Megger and Hi-pot test on electrical cables 11. Program at least 2 distinct models of Protective Relays 5. Overhead power lines. - IOC specific restricted zones. - Controls for elevated work near power lines. Version 0 This document is uncontrolled if printed.
