Star Finder, Part 2
Procedure Part 2: Using the Special Objects and Constellations wheel
This wheel is unique in that one side, the constellations side, depicts the constellations and a
circle showing where in that constellation a unique object might be found.
1.
What unique feature can be easily found in the Big Dipper, aka Ursa Major?
In what other constellation might you find a double star?
2.
Where in the constellation of Orion can you find a nebula?
Draw the constellation Orion. Draw or label where there is a nebula.
3.
Name three constellations that contain open clusters of stars?
4.
In which constellation can you see a galaxy? ____________________
5.
When would be a good DATE to see a blue star (Rigel) if you wanted to star gaze at 10
P.M.? Hint: there are multiple possible answers here, give a Date.
6.
The Pleiades is NOT a constellation, but it is an open cluster of 500+ stars. It is located
in the constellation Taurus. In the space below, draw Taurus and draw where you would
see the Pleiades.
7.
Set your star finder for August 30 at 6 AM. If you wanted to see the Andromeda galaxy,
where should you look? That is, near which horizon?
8.
Using the special objects wheel or simple wheel, name two constellations are never
visible in our Northern skies.
9.
__________________________ and _________________________
Set your special objects wheel for 8 PM on January 20.
a. Name ONE special object and its constellation that is visible in the NORTH horizon.

b. Is this object still visible at 6 AM on January 21? _____ (near which horizon?_____)
10.
