Vocal Literature I - Syllabus Eduardo Azzati, Instructor Overview This course will examine the development of the art song, from the Renaissance to the middle of the 19th century. Materials - Required text: Kimball, Carol. Song: A Guide to Style and Literature. Seattle - Additional materials will be on reserve in the library (scores, other readings) - Listening CDs (I will provide these) Assignments - Reading assignments - Listening assignments - Song analysis - One paper: In-depth analysis of two songs by the same composer or two settings of the same text by different composers. (Please, include copies of the scores of the songs discussed in the paper) Grading Listening quizzes Song analysis Paper Attendance/preparation for class 30 30 30 10 % % % % Two unexcused absences will result in dropping 10 pts. of the final grade. Further absences may result in failing the course.
