World History Syllabus
Mrs. Kearns
Course Overview: Welcome to World History! This class is a two-semester core curriculum
course. “Students in grade ten study major turning points that shaped the modern world, from
the late eighteenth century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world
wars. They trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical
roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations. They
extrapolate from the American experience that democratic ideals are often achieved at a high
price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world. Students develop an
understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political,
economic, and cultural contexts. Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to
understand international relations from a variety of perspectives (State of California Social
Studies Framework).”
Grade Ten – World History
The course will be focused on the state standards for tenth grade Social Studies. The following
units of study will be covered this year:
Unit 1: The Rise of Democratic Ideas
Unit 2: Industrial Revolution
Unit 3: Imperialism
Unit 4: World War I
Unit 5: Totalitarianism and Fascism, the World Between Wars
Unit 6: World War II
Unit 7: The Cold War
Unit 8: The Modern World
Required Text:
World History: The Modern World, Prentice Hall, 2006. In addition, we will use various
supplemental readings including articles, primary documents, essays, etc. Students are
financially responsible for lost or damaged textbooks.
Expectations:
It will be necessary for all students to bring the required materials to class everyday! There will
be homework Monday through Thursday, along with the occasional weekend assignment.
Assignments will range from chapter reviews questions to essays and group projects. Students
are expected to be on time for class, keep up with all the assignments, and to follow all classroom
procedures.
Classroom Procedures:
1. Always show mutual respect for your peers, the teacher, our room and materials, and
yourself.
2. All food, drinks, and gum are to be left outside the classroom.
3. Leave all profanity at the door.
4. Come ready to actively listen, participate, and learn with an open mind.
5. Always respect your right to learn along with the rights of your peers to learn.
Make Up Work:
It is critical that students come to class everyday. You cannot make up the knowledge that is
gained during discussions and classroom activities. Students will be able to turn in work that is
missed from EXCUSED absences. If you are absent, ask a student what you missed and check
the Makeup Binder and your folder for any missed handouts. Students with unexcused absences,
including suspensions, will not be able to turn in homework. Group presentations will not be
pushed back a day for late or missing group members.
Late Work:
It is the Social Studies Department’s policy not to accept late work.
Grading Policy:
Grades are tabulated on a point system. Daily assignments, classroom participation, notebook
portfolios, essays, tests, projects, and homework will all contribute to your final grade. The
following grading system will be used:
90%-100%=A
80%-89.9%=B 70%-79.9%=C 60%-69.0%=D 59.9% and below=F
