Ancient Greek Mythology
This is a comprehensive study of the history of Greece, whose mythological stories and magnificent
structures have influenced much of our present culture. The study of Greek culture covers a vast amount
of material, and it is difficult to do every component justice. However, this unit will attempt to give
students choices so that they may study their areas of interest. Each assignment will include details to
assist the student in achieving the level of mark of their choice. The goal of this unit is that students will
gain the understanding and knowledge necessary to appreciate the diverse, colourful and eventful history
of Greece, and to develop an insight of the impact the Greek culture has had on world history.
ASSIGNMENTS
Choose one topic from the research box and write an expository essay
on that topic. Include pictures, graphs, examples of your findings, a
bibliography, and the prewriting process (brainstorming, notes, outlines,
writing planners and rough drafts).
RESEARCH

Choose a character from the Greek myths, and create a family tree
based on the information you can find about the various gods,
goddesses and heroes who have passed through the character’s life.
Include descriptions of the significance of the family members.
Find photographs of the famous buildings and/or statues of ancient
Greece (e.g.: Parthenon, Knossos, Delphi). Prepare a short report in
the form of a brochure on three structures that a tour guide would be
able to use.

Write letters to the Editor of a newspaper or magazine about topics in the
myths such as theft (Jason and the Golden Fleece), drinking (Polyphemus and
Odysseus), marital problems (Zeus and Hera), kidnapping (Hades and
Persephone), or any others that may interest you.

Write an obituary of heroes in mythology that might include Odysseus,
Hercules, Achilles or Jason. Read an obituary for details that might be
included.
