THEATRE STUDIES – PRODUCTION PROCESS
Unit 3 Theatre Studies
OUTCOME 1
Production Process
APPLY STAGECRAFT TO INTERPRET A PLAYSCRIPT FOR PERFORMANCE TO
AN AUDIENCE AND DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF THE STAGES OF
THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
(50 MARKS)
PRODUCTION PROCESS
This area of study focuses on the development of skills which contribute to the interpretation of a
playscript. Students work collaboratively to contribute to the development of a production. The
students undertake exercises and tasks as a member of the production team in the development of a
playscript through the four stages of production including production planning; production
development; production season; production evaluation.
Students develop an understanding of, and enhance skills that contribute to, the stages of the
theatre production process. Examples include contribution to the production, working in
collaboration with others, time management, organisation, production management, scheduling and
planning.
OUTCOME 1
Apply stagecraft to interpret a playscript for performance to an audience and demonstrate
understanding of the stages of the production process. On completion of this unit the student should
be able to apply stagecraft to interpret a playscript for performance to an audience and demonstrate
understanding of the stages of the production process.
You are required to be an active member of the production team that works on the School Musical
Production. You are required to maintain an annotated production folio of the element of stagecraft
you are working on as part of the production. In the production process, there are four stages that
you must work through in order to develop a successful performance. It is important you work on it
throughout the semester as it is a lot of work to complete within a short space of time. The folio will
be broken up into four sections:
PLANNING (Nov ‘10 – Feb ‘11)
(4-6 pages)
All your research, brainstorming, ideas and sketches based on your elements of stagecraft need to go
in this section. Also research that you have done on the historical and social context of the play. This
includes where, when and who are the people involved. Little Shop of Horrors musical production,
books you’ve read that have given you inspiration or ideas etc. You should also include small notes
about why it has been included in your folio.

UNIT 3
THEATRE STUDIES – PRODUCTION PROCESS
DEVELOPMENT (March – May)
(4-6 pages)
You need to choose from your ideas to develop into final products. For example, after developing 5
sketches for a costume for one of the characters, you chose of the designs to make for actor playing
that character. You should include photos of you making the costume, it being worn by the actor as
well as anything else you feel should be included.
SEASON (May – June)
(4-6 pages)
The final products on display! This could range from photos and comments of you performing your
character on stage, to final costume and make up designs on the appropriate people. In this section,
you should also include the program with your name in it, a ticket and possibly some comments from
the audience about your elements of stagecraft.
EVALUATION (June)
(4-6 pages)
This is the section where you reflect on the work you and your production team have done of the
school production. The most important thing to remember is to be reflective on your own abilities
and participation. Also include things that you could do better next time or something you would like
to investigate or know more about. It is about being reflective, not critical.
DOCUMENTATION
Each section of the folio requires 2 to 4 pages (A3) or 4 to 6 pages (A4) of development of your
stagecraft elements which includes the attached questions or dot points. The documentation will be
presented as a production folio of about 8-12 pages or equivalent for each area of stagecraft selected
by you. Folios can either be digital or hardcopy.
Documentation includes:
 text or writing
 illustrations
 diagrams
 photos
 3D models
 digital video recordings like DVD or DivX, mp4 files
 digital sound recordings like mp3, wav
