///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
1) A wrecking ball (mass = 1500 kg) is suspended from a cable. It is at rest and hangs
straight down. Off to the side, write down how much its velocity, acceleration, and net
force are. Draw a vector for the weight and label it with the symbol for weight. Then
calculate its weight. Draw a vector for tension and label it with the symbol for tension.
How much is the tension?
2) The Mystery Box sits still on a flat
table. Its mass is 8.5 kg. Draw a free-body
diagram of the box. How much is the
normal force?
8.5 kg
3) You push down on the Mystery Box
with an extra 15 N of force. Draw a freebody diagram of the box. How much is the
normal force?
8.5 kg
4) You attach a string to the Mystery Box
and pull it along a frictionless surface with
a force of 24 N to the left. Draw a freebody diagram of the box. Find the
acceleration (magnitude and direction).
8.5 kg
5) You attach a string to the Mystery Box
and pull it along a rough surface with a
force of 24 N to the left at constant
velocity. Draw all the forces that act on the
box and label them. Find the acceleration
(magnitude and direction).
8.5 kg
