TOLERANCE =
Human Behavior Out of Control
“Operating Under the Influence of
DOPAMINE”
Too much dopamine
is the “Off” switch to the thinking brain!
We’re All Learners
Respectful, shared experience
No one is wrong or bad for not knowing
what has recently been discovered
ANIMAL (Mammalian) BRAIN’s reward center is mature at
birth, ready and available to produce dopamine that lasts
longer!
Fear
Anxiety
Risk Taking
Curiosity
Addictions
HUMAN BRAIN (prefrontal cortex), which provides rational
control over emotions and behavior, doesn't mature until
early adulthood (20-25 yrs.)

What are our
Brain Management
Options?
Personal & Collective Empowerment
1. Understand the beneficial & dangerous effects of
Dopamine
2. Think of Brains as Muscle Groups
ACCIDENTAL
BRAIN WIRING
OUTSIDE
Circumstances
Others
Media
INTENTIONAL BRAIN WIRING
INSIDE
3. Educate – Make Dopamine a
Household Word
*learn & teach friends and family about :
power, pleasures, dangers & responsibilities of
dopamine, especially media influences, along with other
essential developmental skills
*Explain inappropriate behavior by incorporating dopamine
into the discussion
4. Make Dopamine Mgt. an Essential Life Skill
* Identify sensory indications of dopamine overload
Experiment with intentional elevation of dopamine
Notice tension, shallow, rapid breathing
* Practice mindful breathing (3/10 Rule)
* Observe thoughts, physical sensations, & behaviors in self &
others for signs of rising dopamine surges
Q. What happens to you when you’re angry or frightened?
Q. When you see someone being mean, which part of their brain is the boss?
5. Take Charge – Media, Diet, Activities
MANAGE MEDIA
"Screen-free" Zones at home
Limit time on devices and computer
No televisions, computers or video games in children's bedrooms
Turn off the TV during meals or homework
Turn off all digital devices at the dining table
No eating while watching media devices.
DO NOT leave the TV on for background noise.
Decide which programs or films to watch ahead of time. Turn off
the device when those programs are over.
Suggest other activities, such as family board games, puzzles, or
going for a walk.
Challenge your family to go 1 week without watching TV or
doing other screen-time activities. Find things to do with your
time that get you moving and burning energy.
Encourage Healthy Dopamine-ful FOOD
*Protein - provides amino acids, Lysine, in particular, that help produce
dopamine
Beef
Chicken
Duck
Tofu
Dairy Products
Eggs
Fish - omega-3 fatty acids in seafood have
a significant effect on raising dopamine
Bananas
* Fruits, Vegetable, and Nuts
Avocados
Apples
Celery
Watermelon
Cherries
Cucumbers
Green Leafy Veggies
Dried beans
Almonds
Honey
Green Tea
And yes, Chocolate - Dark chocolate!
Encourage Healthy Dopamine-ful ACTIVITIES
Exercise
Altruism
Humor
Orgasm
Music
Discovery
Learning
Sports – spectator or participant
Success
Developing New Skills
Exciting Reads and Non-Violent Media
Feelings of Love
ENJOY!
ROLE MODEL
Build network of support
around your values and
priorities
With an understanding of
Dopamine, &
a commitment to manage it,
we can turn humanity
around,
in a new, more Humane
direction . . .
This is Humanity’s
Second Chance!
